Re: Northern Flame
The disappointment is wearing off a bit. I still have to pretend really hard that this is a different band, but it's growing on me.

Re: Northern Flame
I just got my CD in yesterday and have so far played it 1.5 times. No disappointment from me! It's obvious the band has grown/evolved some in the time since Glimpse Of Hope, though Twisted Reality feels more like a natural progression than of a different band to me. Could be the distinctive vocals which help set them apart from others.
I haven't read all of the lyrics yet, but I suppose my only gripe would be that I'm not really sure where some of the lyrics are getting at and that they seem like more of a collection of different thoughts than cohesive ideas. Repeated listens/read-throughs may help with that though.

Re: Northern Flame
I love it! I'd heard a few negative things about the album, so was unsure how I would feel when I listened to the album. But I think it's just as good as their previous. The lyrics are great, and I'm finding more and more things every time I listen to it. Love the ending, with the acapella singing. Top notch stuff.

Re: Northern Flame
So glad to finally have this! Got it Wednesday and am really enjoying it. It has a more Stratovarius vibe to it and is really well done across the board. I'm actually very pleasantly surprised after some initial reactions here. Somehow my impression was this would be really subdued. It is more melodic and the recording maybe smoothed over some of the harder edges (which admittedly I would like to hear) but it's not soft or slow. A Glimpse of Hope had a lot of slow burn, slow starters on the first half. This mixes it up throughout. It's incredibly solid.
On the change in sound, it is different but most of the demos for A Glimpse of Hope were from 2004 and hadn't changed much. It makes sense that 16-17 years later the band would sound different. A song like Heaven and Hell is a sign of tremendous songwriting. It has everything going for it. It sounds more mature and, though that could sound like a curse, I think a track like this isn't even a thought back in 2004. It is classic, big time material.
I hope this album reaches some mainstream ears. I think it would do really well. Consider me greatly impressed!

The more I listen to this the more I doubt that this is for me. I like a bit more punch in my power metal nowadays, like Evertale or Domine.
Still not giving up though.

I find it amusing you think Domine has a lot of punch, they are the epitome of flower metal. No knock, I actually like some of their music but Helloween has punch not Domine.

Re: Northern Flame
Are we talking about the same Domine? I'm only really familiar with the album Emperor of the Black Runes which easily sounds heavier across the board than any album by Helloween. I listened to a few other albums as well and apart from their last album they didn't differ that much. Domine is actually one of those power metal bands that has kept away from the flowery stuff, I even saw some power metal haters admit that over the years.
But well, either way it should serve as an indicator how much tamer the sound of Northern Flame has become.

I suppose it's each to their own, but I think it's just as good as their last album, in fact the more I listen to it, the better it gets.
