CPR - Greg X Volz
Remember a few years ago when the band Classic Petra came out and re-recorded several old Petra songs? It was cool to hear them redone and sounding more modern while maintaining that original feel. Many of us were excited that a form of Petra was back. There was talk of a 2nd album and then an album of new material that just never happened. In the Petra camp, Bob and John are doing some shows but that is the only rattle you'll hear.
Well, that has changed! While Bob Hartman isn't involved, Greg X Volz, Ronnie Cates, John Lowry, and Louie Weaver have formed CPR (classic Petra revived) and are finishing up an album of.....you guessed it....redone Petra songs! I am sure these are tracks that Volz wrote or would have had to gotten permission from Hartman to use. There will be on the debut album that they are currently recording at John Lowry's studio nine classic Petra songs and one classic rock song (non-Petra) on the album. There is talk on Volz's Facebook of doing another classic Petra tune album and then bringing out the new songs that he teases on his website.
You can read all about it at https://www.gregxvolz.com and even see a video in the studio with some tracks being played as a promo.

Yes he does! I've checked in on him from time to time over the last few years and he seems to be able to stay busy doing what he loves, which is awesome. (By the way, it's spelled Lawry)

Sounds like they're doing Aerosmith's "Dream On." I think Greg can hit those highs better at 67 than Steven Tyler did at 24.
Not to say that song isn't amazing as it is.
As for the band, I like Greg's era better than the John era, though the first 4 with John are amazing! Never seen the band live. I'm more interested in any one of the two coming around. Hopefully that'll be some part of this.

Greg did "Dream On" on his Come Out Fighting album. Is he covering his cover?
I hope to get this. I wonder why Bob and Mark aren't involved? Ronny was awesome, the bassist of my favorite Petra era but he didn't play with Greg.

Volz is such a classic era rock singer...still sounds great! I'll never forget getting into More Power to Ya, Not of This World, Beat the System as a new christian in 1985... And i think his version of Dream On is much better than Aerosmith's ...though i have to admit i never liked Aerosmith anyway.

I'll grab this when it comes out. I'm thrilled they're finally redoing It Is Finished. That is still my favorite Petra track ever. I have a feeling that their version of Dream On is going to be miles better than the original. Volz' voice is so far superior to Steven Tyler's.

Re: CPR - Greg X Volz
I will be getting this. I like the various forms of Petra. it seems that they have changed or revamped some form of Petra over the past 15-20 years or so. Before this the line up until about 1994 were fairly constant with a scatter band member change. Since the late 1990's, you have the John Schlitt with newer members. Then you have the trio: Bob, John and Louie during the Revival era. Then you have the Bob and John duo from about 2003 to 2010, including 2 Guys from Petra. Then you have the Classic Petra with the early 80's lineup. Then you go back to the Farewell era of Bob and John doing selected dates with 2 other members and I think this is continuing. Now you have CPR (Classic Petra Revived). I will be all over the CPR Project. I find it odd that Bob is not doing guitars. Maybe he is taking a role similar to what he did during the 90's as an administrative/studio session role. I guess time will tell. From the video, you can se ethe track listing will have:
Judas kiss
It is Finished
Dream On
All Over Me
Praise Ye the Lord (YES!).

Any word on that unreleased metal project Volz was involved in during the early 90's?

Ahh..someone else remembers that!! I remember reading about it being called X-Ray and was going to be in the Van Halen mold...
Obviously it never eventuated and Greg probably considers himself too old at 67 for that now.

I remember Queensryche being the style comparison, but, whatever, it'll probably never see the light of day. If he has enough material recorded from some sessions, there would be some guys around here that would be dying to master it.FreeRangeBeliever wrote:Superjuice wrote:Any word on that unreleased metal project Volz was involved in during the early 90's?
