Anyone here know employment laws?
My 17 year old son just got his first job a week ago at a national fast food chain. He worked 6 days, a few hours a day, mostly in training or shadowing other workers.
I was quizzing him this weekend regarding forms and asked about his I-9 and W-4. I remember filling these out at every job I've ever worked at.
He said that he hasn't had to fill out any forms at all, not even sign anything! I asked him when their paydays are and he hasn't asked yet.
Anyone else think this is odd? Perhaps they're just really disorganized and haven't gotten his forms to him yet?

Sounds odd to me. That it usually the first thing you do. Did he do any online forms that maybe he forgot?

Pretty sure that at my employer those get filled out ASAP. Federal labor laws and whatnot are not something fool with as an employer.

"You must be," said the Cat, or you wouldn’t have come here."

It's a form that tells the government that you are eligible to work in the U.S., either by citizenship or by other legal means.

I don't recall ever having to fill one of those out. When did they start requiring these? Are they mandatory in all 50 states?

Really? Wow! I've been filling them out since the early 90s at least. When you start a job, they make a photocopy of your driver's license and social security card and keep them with this document. I used to job hop a lot when I was in my teens and 20s, and I filled out many of these.

Re: Anyone here know employment laws?
I live in Canada and I deal with US payroll and benefits for a large conglomerate US company. I'm familiar to some degree with US tax and employment laws. the W-4 is for federal tax elections. I-9 form is an onboarding/new hire forms that employees fill out. Usually companies get employees to fill these out before their start date or within the first week of hire. It seems like the company haven't gotten around to giving your son the forms or is doing things under the table. I would pursue the company to get the forms to be filled out so your son's pay won't be delayed. Also, I would find out the pay period start and end dates and the pay frequency - weekly or biweekly so your son will know when to expect his pay to be given.

Is he working at Bernie Sanders Fried Chicken? That might explain the work / pay discrepancy.
