Re: Black Metal
Perhaps not pure kvlt black metal. But i always defend Dissection as a masters. They have that evil sounding black metal with lots of melodeath influences. John put his soul into his music. No wonder, the vocals are magnificient too.
I prefer bands like dissection over any other true Black Metal, although there are obiosly good stuff there.

Good call on Dissection, Kaiser! Great Melodic Black Metal there!
In fact, I think I'm gonna pull out my Dissection album and spin that one today!!!
Totally in the mood for that one!

Re: Black Metal
I'm not sure how much of what I call "blackmetal" actually qualifies as such to purists. There IS a certain feel/sound/tonality to the music that my brain identifies as "blackmetal" or "blackmetal influenced", so my particular list may overflow the bounds of what blackmetal IS, strictly speaking.......I tend to like this stuff more on the epic,atmospheric/symphonic end of things rather than raw and primitive. Sorry for the alphabetical natur of the bottom portion, my brain is slightly non functional this morning and I had to resort to a Wikipedia list to pull names from my music collection :/
Emperor
Immortal
Keep of Kalessin
Lengsel
Grendel (the Italian one)
Abigail Williams
Hoth
Crimson Moonlight
A Hill to Die Upon
Absu
Agalloch
Bal-Sagoth
Borknagar
Carach Angren
Dragonlord
Drottnar
Enslaved
Melechesh
Nightfall
Slechtvalk
Honestly, though, you are most likely to find me spinning the first 5-6 names....

Re: Black Metal
As you may have guessed, i really like symphonic metal, and i even like more symphoblack Prepare to say bye bye to Cradle Take your time to enjoy this masterpieces
Early Chthonic is a MUST
I always defended Redemption Process by Anorexia Nervosa as the best SBM. The other 2 albums are worth too.
The final Resurrection from Lyfthrasyr is so good it's unbelibeable
Advent Sorrow - Before the dimming light EP is pretty good. It reminds me of Spiritual Black Dimensions era Dimmu Borgir
Sirius is High quality Symphoblack like Early Limbonic Art
Winterburst is clearly inspired on their style to Anorexia Nerviosa. The quality too.
Catamenia have NOTHING to envy old Dimmu Borgir
I think Apocryphal from Riul Doamnei are worth getting too. Listen their song Legacy in Violation i can't find it on youtube
Vesperian Sorrow are underground band that need more attention. The intro in Solitude is one of the best metal intros i've ever heard
Carach Angren are popular. No wonder
Slechtvalk is CSBM. Their first album is great, and these songs are GOLD!
Latest Shade Empire is very symphoblack and great. Their other stuff is killer too
Vesania's symphonics are lovely
Infinity by Screaming Savior is a good album
Early Chthonic is a MUST

Re: Black Metal
I guess you checked this bands, have you?
Anyway, i leave you a bit more of homework here.
Krake is symphonic black metal in the vein of mid era dimmu borgir. Do not expect super catchy songs, but a great and passionate symphonic orchestra. Get this album. Awesome stuff

Re: Black Metal
Kaiser, thanks for all your recommendations! I haven't checked each one yet, but I plan on doing so! I was in a hurry last time I saw this thread - and kinda forgot about it.
Glad you bumped it up though!

Re: Black Metal
Another band i recent got is Odium, pretty good and similar to Limbonic art, but less epic and less symphonic.

Re: Black Metal
I like black metal, but I don't listen to nearly as much of it as I do death metal. Over time I've found that Evroklidon's album The Flame of Sodom has pretty much become my go-to black metal album.
Edit: Plus, the album is on bandcamp for name your price. Tough to beat that. (Although I own the CD, and would gladly buy it again in spite of the free download.)

Re: Black Metal
Thank you. I've been wanting to hear them.
I like the unproduction and lineup. Definitely a fan of raw black metal...
...unfortunately, the drum machine kind of kills it for me.

I can't really argue with this, but for some reason I can always come back to this album. The songwriting, I guess.
I also really like Darkspace--one of the perhaps two examples of drum machine use that I think is completely justified.
Edit: Of course, I'm no musician and certainly no drummer, so take my opinion for what it's worth.

Re: Black Metal
Well-programmed drums don't bother me.
This is my favorite example of awfully-programmed drums:

Re: Black Metal
Yeah, I don't mind 'well-programmed' drums. I listen to a lot of Electronic and Industrial music and that stuff is mostly all synthetic drums. But then again - that kind of music fits with synthetic drums.
Metal and Rock both kinda need real drums to really sound good. Though there are the rare exceptions. Theocracy's debut album comes to mind. It sounded pretty good with fake drums IMHO. I like that album a lot. So it can be done.

Re: Black Metal
To me, the sound of the programmed drums has little to do with it.
I like some fake drums, but it's got to be done right.
As a drummer, it's super obvious to me who isn't a drummer and programs what they think they hear in other songs...
...and who is a drummer and programs like how they play.

Re: Black Metal
No love for Mgla in here?
I'll not couch for lyrics, as I've not investigated thoroughly; I understand that a very bleak nihilistic viewpoint is foundational to the band......
But the MUSIC! I've been rather entranced by this album since I got it. Simple themes and motifs, but more layers than an onion named Shrek has.....and the cymbal work is kinda crazy on top of the blasts.....this is an EASY fit in my overall top 5 albums of the year......

Re: Black Metal
It seems you read my mind Exo!
Although i have not heard them too much, i agree their music it's great, and it has everything i like/look for any good Black Metal band. Cold, depressive, melancholic yet wonderful music.
And here comes a new discovery recent i found, they are Mare Cognitum and are clasified as Ambient Black Metal. This music just takes your soul into another dimension. I bet you will love them

Re: Black Metal
That's good stuff. Apparently the new term for this blackmetal with a lot of drone/ambience is "blackgaze". I'm thinking of screwing with the genre namers by mixing this with some Iced Earth style riffing......"I play Power Blackgaze......"

Re: Black Metal
I get what you mean but i woudn't consider them Blackgaze. Bands like Deafheaven, Lantlos, Alcest, Fen... are blackgaze. I considere Mare cognitum to be Black metal mixed with ambient. Both styles sound sorrowful, melancholic and sad. Similar sound but slightly difference between genres. Love both. Do you have any band that sound like Mare Cognitum?

Re: Black Metal
No, unfortunately.
I do kinda feel like the "genre naming" thing has started to get out of hand...........
