Some positive, christianesque lyrics don't a christian band make. Were they as evil as some wanted to make them out? No. Wouldn't say they were a christian band though.

I wouldn't go so far as to call them a "Christian band," but I think, even as Bob describes himself as an unbeliever, he makes a pretty good case to back the main argument he lays out in the first paragraph of "The Believer" section of the post:
"One of the biggest misconceptions in all of rock music is that Black Sabbath worship/celebrate/glorify Satan in their lyrics. They don’t. In fact, a detailed read through bassist Geezer Butler’s lyrics proves the opposite is true: Black Sabbath worship/celebrate/glorify God, by explaining/condemning/warning of Satan."
I'm neither a Sabbath fanboy nor detractor. I personally don't get too hardcore into hair-splitting for the sake of squeezing art into a "Christian"/"non-Christian" dichotomy, but over the years I've run into a good number of "Christianity has no place in metal" rants, and I'm sure I'm not alone. Bob's blog post is helpful, I think, in raising salient counterpoints (from the inventors' own pens) which reach beyond the familiar "After Forever" lyrics. I read it and thought it might be a helpful and/or interesting read for others.

It's never been as bad as it is now, and it has only gotten this bad recently.
The new "holiness" is just a cloak of deception thrown over the unrighteous to mask their sin instead of true accountability and repentance. Man is changing how society views sin and what it considers "wrong".
The other part of that is the changing view the world has on Christians. Christianity is being viewed more and more as something only for the unintelligent.
Anyway, not trying to start a theo debate......so I won't pursue this anymore.
Getting back to the original topic....... even if they aren't devil worshipers, even if they denounce Satan in their songs, even if they write songs about a god....doesn't make them Christian. Christianity is more than just believing in a god or being spiritual.

I'd be okay with After Forever being the first Christian metal song, but nah, the band as a whole has lyrics that go back and forth far too often.

Members of the band have said themselves that a lot of their lyrics had double meanings, like many artists, they like to leave them open to interpretation, as well as confuse some. They were not the first band to touch on Christian themes in their lyrics...

The band is NOT Christian. There are MANY interviews with the band where they in fact admit and state Satan as being the one who gave them many of their lyrics AND many of their lyrics are very satanic.

I can understand why people don't think they are a Christian band though. They don't seem anywhere near as pro-Christ as anti-Satan/Hell/Evil.

We should never let non-Christians define what the Church is or what the Christian message is. That said, even if a large pool had just a drop of cyanide.....who would still swim in it ?

Yeah, I don't know if they ever said that either....but..
We know the Holy Spirit inspires, teaches and directs those that have called upon Gods name...
.....and we know satan does the same for those that are his, as well.

The only "satanic" lyric i've seen from Sabbath is Breaking into Heaven. Now granted theyve had songs criticizing religion as well such as Buried Alive, but thats about it, although to be fair im only familiar with the ozzy and dio years, as well as the Born Again album, maybe the lyrics from Seventh Star and on are worse, but i've never made the effort to delve into those albums.
