Another one I like that fits on my “Horror lite” list… Trick or Treat (1986)
It’s not particularly scary, but it’s fun and spooky. Similar to The Gate or Monster Squad.
It also has scenes with Gene Simmons and Ozzy Osbourne.

Favorite horror movie? Dunno, I love horror, so I have too many.
Scariest movie I’ve ever seen? Hands down Rise of Skywalker. Absolutely horrifying in every way. I still have nightmares.

I've never had a movie get under my skin in such a way; it's one of the only movies I'd call "brilliant" and really affected how I perceive violence in film. I recommend going into it blind and not watching any trailers or reading about it beforehand, though be warned that it's not a pleasant watch. (It does have some violence and language, but zero sex/nudity though a woman is shown in her underwear in a non-sexual way IIRC.)
The director remade it into an English-language version with Tim Roth and Naomi Watts. Apparently it's a shot-for-shot remake of his own movie made 10 years prior. I've only seen the English version.
Yeah it's not an easy movie to watch - by design. I've seen it once and I think that was probably enough, but it's a movie I hesitantly but highly recommend. I can't think of any other movies like it.

I only heard of it because I was looking something up about movies that ended it "funny" and Google auto-filled in "funny games" for some reason lolKerrick wrote:Has anyone seen Funny Games? "Jason Goes To Hell" is pretty much a stinker, even by the standards of the series. It might be a strange thing to say for a "Friday The 13th" film, but it's a bit more sadistic than usual.WildWorld wrote:Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1 & 2

However, "Jason X" is alright, helped by the novelty of having the same kind of things happening on a spaceship in the future.

House on the Edge of the Park (1980) and Angst (1983) are other home invasion type movies that're really good.

David Hess was a master at these "Super Creep" roles just like his performance in Last House On the Left.Sabbath85 wrote:Kerrick wrote:TheDoctor394 wrote:I too hard to bear in one go. Last House On The Left is a movie I regret watching. The psychological torture of the girls was difficult to watch; it's such a bleak movie. Though I do really like the movie it's based on: The Virgin Spring.

Lots of great movies mentioned. Some favorites not mentioned.
Omen
Hellraiser
Inferno (sequel to Suspiria, just as good in my opinion.)
Scariest, I agree with Excorcist.

Inferno was indeed a good one. Argento employing the use of vibrant colors again. Mainly reds, blues and purples this time.
I still like Suspiria the best though. Timeless movie.
There was also a (very) belated 3rd chapter of The Three Mothers Trilogy called Mother Of Tears (2007). It stars his daughter Asia Argento and wasn't near as good as the first two, but I wouldn't call it a waste of film or anything.

Magnus Prime, I did like Mother of Tears but it was kind of all over the place. It was a shame they could not tighten that up.

It's been a while, but I used to be a big Argento fan. (Suspiria, Opera, and Phenomena were always my favorites.) I couldn't get into Inferno. There were some good moments but overall it just didn't click with me, even though it seems most fans love it. And I thought Mother Of Tears was pretty terrible haha!

I don't understand the popularity of Susperia. That was nonsense. I turned it off maybe 1/3 through. Weird, stylized nonsense.

Then you missed the best parts!
It's the weird/surreal atmosphere that makes Suspiria work. Very similar to the method used in The Shining (1980) - which is another movie that starts out kinda slow and calm, but builds into the suspense and horror later.

Ha! That settles it. I've seen The Shining three times, 15-20 years apart each time. Each time I din't care for it, but rewatched it to "give it another shot." I'm not a fan.

I didn't like Susperia the first time I saw it. I read something that explained that it was actually written for girls much younger than the college age women in the movie.
lol, Kerrick. I cannot defend Mother of Tears. I just like it but Inferno is great.

It's because of the cinematography - it is so delicious you feel like you can eat the wall paper the entire show.scottmitchell74 wrote:I don't understand the popularity of Susperia. That was nonsense. I turned it off maybe 1/3 through. Weird, stylized nonsense.

If you really like to take deep dives and want to check out an esoteric analysis of film, here's Jay Dyer doing a film analysis of Suspiria. His perspective comes from an Orthodox Christian point of view:

Because of this thread I've been looking into Susperia a bit. Apparently it's one of those Italian movies where the prog rock band Goblin did the soundtrack. They've been a big inspiration for Rhapsody.
I just might have a look and see if I can watch it somewhere.

Argento rules.. Was at a screening of Tenebre here in Toronto last year and Maurizio Guarini from Goblin opened the event by playing a bunch of Argento film scores. It was awesome.
