Top Ten Bands that sound like Queensryche
Yes, no one sounds more like Queensryche right now than the Todd LaTorre fronted era of the band. They are still making very strong prog metal music that they more or less invented. Here are what I consider the best matches for those looking for a Queensryche style fix of the greatest band of all-time:
10. Heir Apparent - Quality prog metal straight from the original era. Not the most high-end production and lyrics on the cheesy side at times, but they still deliver the musical goods giving you the Queensryche fix of the E.P. mixed with The Warning.
9. Scarlet Rayne - A band I never heard of til recently who could really dish out some great prog metal in the Q side of things. The singer is great as a Tate-type and the songs are an example of well-crafted prog with some killer leads tastefully played.
8. Divine Regale - This band is unique in that they aren't all that heavy and are inspired more by the Rage For Order-era of Queensryche going for more sound experimentation and building upon textures, but it still rocks.
7. The Sacrificed - Eli Prinson is one of the best Geoff Tate-inspired singers around and proves it on their cover of Before the Storm.
6. Obsession - More on the classic heavy metal side of things and they got some killer riffs with Methods of Madness being an underground classic. Singer Michael Vescera put a gruffer edge to the Geoff Tate style and developed such a great reputation that he became the lead vocalist for Loudness.
5. Moon of Steel - This is a really cool Italian band that forges a rich tapestry of metal steeped in classically trained musicianship including lots of classical guitars. Singer apes Tate very well and they aren't derivative at all in their songwriting. Too bad it couldn't last...
4. Lethal - Fantastic debut album with some MTV air play under their belts. They tried to fit in the 90's trends and got lost in the shuffle like most 80's-based metal bands.
3. Haven - The great Haven should be heard by all Q fans, but they were one of those forever underground bands. Pristine high end vocals over killer heavy metal skillfully played, especially in the drumming department. The first two albums sport a solid sound all aound with their sophomore album, Age of Darkness, being their progressive metal masterpiece.
2. Balance of Power - You could include virtually any Lance King related projects (my personal favorite is Avian). Lance is not as powerful of a' singer as Tate, but has a little more soul and creates great melodies. No wonder his talents are sought out by so many talented progressive metal bands like Pyramaze.
1. Crimson Glory - More contemporaries of 'Ryche than imitators, but they stayed on the fantasy side of things lyrically whereas Q was more sci-fi like. Brilliant melodies as well that went unmatched in the subgenre as far as I'm concerned. Midnight was a one-of-a-kind singer and reached higher heights more than anybody, but he was a dark, troubled soul and left us too early...
Honorable mentions: Veni Domine (Frederick Sjoholm has a Geoff Tate-like singing voice, but there's little to no doom in Queensryche and Domine basically became a doom band, but, what a doom band...), , Deliverance (Camelot In Smithereens era D is heavily inspired by Queensryche, but Jimmy puts an original spin on things. And the band itself is named after a Q song), Sacred Warrior (Obviously, Ray Parra sings like Geoff Tate, but the band itself is more in the trad metal side of things), Screamer [Good attempt at delivering The Warning era in a metallic way, but the singer stays in falsetto for too long and it becomes too obvious (guitar solos can get a bit obnoxious at times as well) Still, a worthy addition to your Queensryche-type catalog]Power of Omens (Okay, they sound a lot like Ryche, but this is everything wrong with progressive metal and goes way overboard in the noodling department. The drummer is especially very busy from the start to the exhausting finish, treating every moment in the song like its the climatic ending).

Cool list, I had never heard of Scarlet Rayne or Steel Moon.
I'll add a few honorouble mentions.
Kamelot - the first two albums but the debut more so.
Shadowkeep - the first three albums.
Sanvoisen - Exotic Ways

Re: Top Ten Bands that sound like Queensryche
Have not listened to Shadowkeep before and they definitely could be an honorable mention for sure, but Sanvoisen could crack my top ten - great find. I'll also add Recon (more on the trad metal side) and En Force (extremely obscure with only a four song demo, but are downright close to the Q).
