Any classic thrash bands whose modern albums are their best?
Are there any classic thrash bands where you prefer their modern work over their early stuff?
I can’t think of any, really. The only possibility for me is Death Angel, but that’s mainly because I find them hit and miss overall. And even still, I’d probably say Act III is still their best.
There are several bands that have good modern work (e.g. Testament), but it’s no patch on the classics.
I bet I know ToB’s answer.

My favorite TQT album is MVoaTR, but that's barely modern and overall their classic stuff is better. I really like a lot of thrash bands modern albums more than most people (Deliverance, Metallica) but I still usually prefer the classic stuff.
As far as metal in general goes, I prefer the modern Stryper albums. But for thrash I can't think of any.

I might actually prefer modern Kreator as it’s more melodic.

I find that in general, for bands with a long list of albums in their catalog (as is often the case with classic bands by this time), quality tends to drop with time. Maybe because they start running out of ideas (which is honestly understandable). Obviously some exceptions exist, but I can’t think of any for classic thrash bands

Hence why I'm glad I won't have to force myself to come up with new ideas, and instead ended up coming up with enough ideas for 36 albums without really even trying to lol.seth wrote:I find that in general, for bands with a long list of albums in their catalog (as is often the case with classic bands by this time), quality tends to drop with time. Though, while I'm good on lyrics, I might start running out of riffs... I might have to start mixing in other subgenres to keep stuff non-repetitive

I like that album fine, but I thought it needed better riffs overall.Black Rider wrote:I like the new Atrophy better but that's about it.

I had to think about this.
I would say Voivod's recent albums are their best ones, but it's close.
There are probably more, but this is very, very rare.
Yes, I agree about Atrophy too. This new one is by far their best album.

Hirax!
I think that Flotsam & Jetsam have also done some of their best records from The Cold onwards (minus Ugly Noise).

I don't hate Ugly Noise, some good riffing but not a top album by them.

Thrash, not sure. I love 72 Seasons but, it doesn't beat MOP or AJFA. I love TSK - Big D but it doesn't beat the S/T or WOOW musically. United Abominations is my fav MD album though. Metal overall though, Stryper.

In general my answer is no.
But I will say that several of the newer Prong albums are excellent!
