Portnoy back in Dream Theater.

Maybe they do something more metal again.

I'm surprised he rejoined.  There was so much animosity there.
I only followed it tangentially but the interview rags played up the drama up for years.

Distance Over Time was pretty metal. It’s probably the only Mangini album I like, since it’s true they’ve been far less metal since Portnoy left.

If Friedman was going to rejoin he could've done it recently. He seems satisfied where he's at unfortunately.

I'd be surprised if it was!  My last name is King - as is Kerry's - hence all the Slayer jokes around here.  (Also because in general I really don't care for thrash.)

That said, I'm gonna give a call to the rest of the Slayer dudes and see if we can get the band back together.  I've been writing some thrash riffs that really slap.

Did not see this coming.  When I first saw it, I thought it was for just a few shows or some kinda troll.

The Prog Report released a top 30 list for the 2000's and Mike Portnoy was the drummer on 6 of the albums with only two coming from DT.

Yup, did not see this coming either. I thought the band would retire soon and the members would head to their different side projects. Seeing the videos of this summer's tour with everything so much smaller than before it seemed to me like DT was past its' prime.

Thanks for posting that, Super. I've been a pretty big DT fan through the years (especially the first decade and a half) and my teenage drummer son loves playing along to them. I've also been a big fan of Portnoy's collaborations with Neal Morse.

However...I honestly don't think much is going to change with Portnoy back in the band. I've thought DT's music has evolved pretty much in line with their pre-Mangini stuff. With the exception of a few things (I don't think Portnoy would have supported the double length The Astonishing), I don't think DT will look all that different.

I could be wrong, and I'd be happy to be wrong. I wish DT could put out another album with the emotion, rawness, and energy of some of the old ones.

Be nice if they'd go back to Train Of Thought era but Im not holding my breath.

Portnoy is the X-factor in the band, otherwise its full of cold, calculating music theory robots.  I heard Portnoy and Sherinian joking around they were the only two members in the band that ever had a personality.  I kind of agree and I think it takes a firey persona to make this band click.  So, my hopes aren't that high, but they are a lot higher than they were with Mangini in the band.

Mike knows his way around a song and, somehow, he can help add that classic rock feel to the music.  Don't know how he does it, but he really makes a difference.  I know of no other band that's made more classic tunes the past 30+ years than these guys.  The last two with Portnoy weren't great, but maybe that's why he needed to get away and recharge his DT batteries.  Hopefully, they got another Octavarium/Train of Thought in them, but I really don't expect I&W or Metropolis ever again.

I hope you're right, Super. I would have said these things about Mike in the past, but hadn't seen too much inspired work of his lately. I often wonder if some career musicians have used up a lifetime's worth of inspiration in a much shorter amount of time...

I think the quality of the songwriting and arrangements will be better with Portnoy back in the band.

I'm also glad that they made it past their differences.

And I hope that both you and Super are correct about it. I have my doubts but I'm just one guy lookin' in on the situation.

Seven, what did you think of Sons Of Apollo? Might be my favorite of Mike's other bands.

I have only listened to it a bit. I enjoyed it, but would need to listen some more. It seems their was a lot of cussing on the album I listened to. Am I correct?

Pretty cool song.  No classic, but Petrucci's guitar tone is really wicked with some nasty crunch.  Love his solo work here, but Jordan manages to annoy a little bit.  Mike sounds like he's got drum triggers going.

Petrucci sounding intense, hopefully he's like that the whole album.
