It's not because it's a ballad. There are plenty of great ballads. 

It's because it's musically boring. 

It's also the style of the ballad. Bland "adult contemporary" kind of stuff. No hooks to be found.

The lyrics are fine.

This.  I listen to this song almost every Good Friday.  It's very un-Tourniquet musically and yes, "musically boring," but it might be the most introspective thing they've ever written.
