Favorite Funeral Doom Bands/Albums?
Not a frequent genre for me, but sometimes I just gots to get my funeral DOOOOOOM on. How about you? What are some of your favorites?
A few I enjoy:
Thergothon: Stream from the Heavens (one of the OGs)
Faithless Minutes Devoured: A Eulogy for Mankind (Christian)
Slow: V: Oceans (probably my favorite I’ve heard)

Like many others, Ahab was my gateway-band to the genre, though right around that time I also discovered Asunder which mixed a cello with their funeral doom very well. This song is just majestic:
I do really like Faithless Minutes Devoured as well, and of course Dauðaró and Elemental Transcendence as mentioned in Dauðaró's thread.

Re: Favorite Funeral Doom Bands/Albums?
I've never really been able to get into Funeral Doom much. I'm not big on slow music. When it comes to Death/Doom, I prefer the more melodic bands like Novembers Doom, Mother of Graves, etc. I need the variety in vocals, instrumentation, etc. which is probably why I like "Within the Ancient Forest" slightly more than " Exhumed of the Earth." The new album from Dream Unending last year is about as funereal as I can take.

Black Rider’s thinking, “why would I listen to Ahab when I could listen to ABBA???”

Skepticism, from my country. Especially their album Stormcrowfleet. One of the best atmospheres I know in an album. Little bit different from your usual funeral doom atmosphere, more of an romantic vibe. Don't listen to the new mix, stick with to the old one.

Some others that have rocked my remarkably handsome face of late:
Mournful Congregation: The June Frost, The Book of Kings, The Exuviae of Gods Part 2
The Howling Void: Into Darkness Ever More Profound
Ahab: The Call of the Wretched Seas, The Coral Tombs

Another great one that's also from my country is Shape of Despair. Very beautiful music, helps to write my poetry. I own all of their studio albums on vinyl.

Why is it called funeral doom anyway? Is it depressing or something like that?

It’s definitely not a genre for everybody, but some of us weirdos find it compelling.

I tend to enjoy the more energetic side of doom, stuff like Nomad Son. For the most part, death-doom and funeral doom I’ve heard has been kinda boring for me

If you aren’t able to jive with the atmosphere you’ll definitely find it boring.
Still more exciting than For Today, though.

Yeah at least it merely sounds boring and doesn’t make me want to plug my ears, like metalcore tends to do

Great band, more on the deathy side of the genre.

You find super slow songs with weird atmospheres, more EXCITING(key word) than For Today? Really? It's fine if you prefer it musically, but more exciting?Pethead wrote:If you aren’t able to jive with the atmosphere you’ll definitely find it boring.
