I'm generally the same way. When listening to an album, I never hit the skip button (except for the couple of songs that have long unnecessary silent parts at the end which is very annoying...), though when I have my library on shuffle, I almost ALWAYS skip Sonata Arctica's song Sh*tload Of Money - which is musically as inane as the song title/lyrics. It's also on my least-favorite SA album anyways, so it very, very rarely gets played.

I'm a huge power metal fan, and like some of Sonata Arctica, but they're not one of my favourites, and that song is pretty dumb. And I never have that much money anyway, so why would I want to be reminded of it?Kerrick wrote:TheDoctor394 wrote:If I avoid any music because of lyrics, it tends to be a whole album....I like to listen to a whole album, or not listen to it at all.

The God That Failed on The Black Album. (I realize this song is about James’ mother’s death due to her whacky Christian Science nonsense, but I still don’t care for the lyrics).
Son of the Morning on The Dream Calls for Blood (Death Angel)
Re: Songs you skip because of lyrics on albums you like?
Yeah, I sympathize with James and understand why he wrote the song, but he's blaming the wrong thing. God didn't fail, his mom just expected him to do things he doesn't usually do.Pethead wrote:

On the other hand, before I read the lyrics I always assumed Leper Messiah would be like that, as the title is very blasphemous sounding... but then I found out what it's about, and I have a song with the exact same theme lol.

A few years ago I watched a new live version of "Finish What You Started." And he makes it loud and clear in the bridge what the song is really about by changing the lyrics a little bit.Pethead wrote:Except Sammy thinks he’s clever. MagnusPrime wrote:Lyrics have never really bothered me. Especially in bands that tend to sing fast (lookin' at you, Slayer) or have death/growling vocal styles where you can't understand a lot anyway.
On a semi-related note, how many here fast-forward past profanity and/or nudity in a film? Not trying to call anyone out, but I've actually met people in the past who won't listen to certain bands because of content but will watch movies with content that is as bad or worse than the albums or songs they avoid. I've encountered the inverse of this phenomenon as well.
I agree. Good point!

I don't skip profanity, but as I've aged/matured I avoid or skip the naked stuff.
That said; we don't watch movies over and over and over (mostly) like we do songs. Songs get stuck in our heads. That's a huge reason music gets this treatment.

Yeah, that's probably part of why I'm a little more forgiving with Slayer, though they still have many songs I won't touch like Hell Awaits or Christ Illusion.Black Rider wrote:I'll admit my standards aren't consistent, a lot has to do with how the song strikes me. Same with all art.

This, but with a different timetable.Superjuice wrote:I consider Defenders of the Faith one of the pinnacles of metal, but I haven't listened to "Eat Me Alive" in 25+ years .

I just realized that there isn't actually a song called Christ Illusion, but take your pick from Cult and Skeleton Christ to which song fits best. Both awful songs.StevenCressler wrote:Yeah, that's probably part of why I'm a little more forgiving with Slayer, though they still have many songs I won't touch like Hell Awaits or Christ Illusion.Black Rider wrote:I'll admit my standards aren't consistent, a lot has to do with how the song strikes me. Slayer - Cleanse the Soul (The one song on South of Heaven that has the usual garbage Slayer lyrics. I'm sure some would say Spill the Blood too but that song doesn't paint Satanism in a positive light so I don't mind it)
Re: Songs you skip because of lyrics on albums you like?
Checked around songmeanings and found out it was inspired by Aleister Crowley's writings when Dickinson wrote it, proceeded to delete all files. One of several songs Bruce wrote about Crowley or his works.

Btw, would y'all count Wake Up Dead as encouraging cheating, or just a story abt Dave's life? I'm not sure for myself.WildWorld wrote:Dont care much for sexual lyrics, but most are too cheesy to take seriously. I'm more offended by songs that seem to encourage cheating like Great White's Rock Me, W.A.S.P.'s Wild Child, Bryan Adams' Run To You, and Heart's All I Wanna Do (apparently the band members also hate that song, at least Ann Wilson does).

I never realized until recently how blasphemous Pantera could be at times, such as BDBD or Slaughtered (and, while less extreme, Becoming too)

That's also how I look at that song. It's about a perverted version of our God and not the true one.Christian Thrash Rules wrote:Not sure off the top of my head. I love Damage Inc. and Dyers Eve, but I don't listen to them as much as other Metallica songs. Unlike some people, The God That Failed doesn't bother me. James is talking about his mom, who was a Christian Scientist, which is NOT Christian. So, it's saying the fake god of Christian Science failed, not our God. That's how I look at it anyways.
