Ok, I was never a big Metallica fan. I don't care for most thrash or speed metal.
But, I know they have a more radio friendly era. What albums from that era would be good for me to try?

The "black album" is the "best" of the commercial era (though you may want to avoid "The God That Failed"). Load and Reload have their moments and arent as bad as most metalheads say, but they do have lots of filler. Garage Inc. is a double album consisting of the old Garage Days EP and various B-Sides, and a new disc full of covers), and S&M is an album of their songs done with the San Francisco orchestra.

^WildWorld nailed it.
Though do yourself a favor and check out some of the stuff from their "golden era" because musically it really is quite good!

Oh, I am quite aware of their early albums. Back in the day, I had everything from "Kill Em All" up to "And Justice for All". I got rid of them when I went into my nearly 30 year Christian only kick. To be honest, I really only had them because they were kind of mandatory for metalheads to have. I played them, but rarely as they just never connected with me. So, I would be more interested in the more radio friendly stuff if anything.
Shoot, if it weren't for the folding chair snare, I might even have liked "St. Anger". I know--I should hand in my metal card.

Right on. Metallica was my introduction to metal and I was just completely blown away by them when I first heard them. Their consistent negativity/angst wore on me after a while though. I stopped listening to them around the time that St. Anger was released but remember liking a few songs from it and absolutely hating others haha. It may be partly nostalgia, but I actually really enjoyed Load and listened to it a ton back in the day.

If that were true, I think A lot of metal heads would hand it in, as it seems one of the most hated sounds.

The older she get's the more she's sounding like Stevie Nicks. Pretty good cover IMO.
