Metallica: The Movie!
(actually, it's a retitled 70s sci-fi b-movie originally called Star Odyssey, but let me have my fun)

If they had Christian lyrics over the exact same music, would you still say that about their early music?

I'm being a bit facetious, but honestly I never cared much for their earlier music and do consider them highly overrated as far as actual music quality goes. Yes they were stylistically influential. But if given the choice I'd rather listen to Testament or Paradox, or another band influenced by them. At least those bands have better lead guitar, more harmonic sophistication, and don't have Hetfield's whiny / teenage-snotty vocals.Temple of Blood wrote:

I cannot stand Dave Mustaine's vocals either. They just grate on me.

There are thrash bands I'd rather listen to than Metallica too (like Dark Angel, Artillery, Exodus, etc. etc.) but mainly because I've worn out those early albums. I don't think their post-Black album material is special at all and I don't believe people are actually assessing those albums on their actual quality. Paradox I don't like at all. I like Testament's debut album more than most any thrash album by any band but they undoubtedly took a lot of their musical ideas from Ride the Lightning and Hell Awaits on that one.
Hetfield's modern day vocal style sounds VERY similar to Nickelback I noticed the other day.
Mustaine's vocals didn't really bother me at all until the remasters where he re-recorded the old vocals. My favorite singing of his was on the debut where he did more Whoooaoaoaoaoaoa! kind of yells and the harsh high-pitched WWAAARRGGGH! thing. It showed attitude and a distinct anti-pop appeal. His vocals are not the showpiece of Megadeth anyway, just like the bass guitar playing of Slayer is not its focal point.

Had no idea he re-recorded his vocals, that's a bold move.Temple of Blood wrote:

Yes I don't mind the vocals on the 1st album at all. It is mostly after that....

James' lyrics got much better from MOP on. They're amazing on 72S.Constantine wrote:I'm being a bit facetious, but honestly I never cared much for their earlier music and do consider them highly overrated as far as actual music quality goes. At least all the dark themes make songs like "Escape" and "Lords of Summer" hit much harderBlack Rider wrote:I get tired of the angsty nihilism they spout but it's our modern world.

It was only done out of necessity. He was trying to remix/remaster all the old albums but the vocal tracks on some of them were gone.
