GOOD albums, BAD production!
List time again!
Here are some really good albums that suffer from a bad mix/production:
Vicious Rumors - Sadistic Symphony (2000)
Dark Angel - Leave Scars (1989)
Nevermore - Enemies Of Reality (2003) (corrected with the 2005 remix/remaster)
Flotsam And Jetsam - No Place For Disgrace (1988)
Dream Theater - When Dream And Day Unite (1989)
... and some that aren't produced so well, but it doesn't bother me as much:
Metallica - ...And Justice For All (1988)
Overkill - W.F.O. (1994)
Testament - Souls Of Black (1990)
Anybody have more to add?

Acheron- Rites of the black mass
Suffocation- Breeding the spawn (One of their best albums, hampered by bad production, though they re-did every song...1 or 2 on each subsequent album)
Morpheus Descends- Ritual of infinity (great album. Not terrible production, but not great production either)
Testament- The new order (my fave Testament album. Production isn't bad, just the volume is not loud enough. But kinda adds to the magick of the album at the same time)

I'd have to mention the entire Blind Guardian discography. The new remasters are really good luckily.

I haven't listened to Blind Guardian in a little while, but I especially remember not being too pleased with the production and mixing on Imaginations. I'll have to look into those remasters.
As for the lists we're making, I would also add that albums like Metallica's Death Magnetic, that have that whole "brickwalled" loudness war ear-fatigue nonsense going on, should be included as well.
Others like that:
Rush - Vapor Trails (2002) (fixed on remaster)
Whitesnake - Good To Be Bad (2008) and Forevermore (2011)
Black Sabbath - 13 (2013)
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing (2005)
I'm sure there are lots more...

Re: GOOD albums, BAD production!
I have to somewhat correct myself: the newer versions I talk about are also remixed. Nuclear Blast has reissued all their pre Twist in the Myth albums in the form of double CDs. One is the remix/remaster version (dating from a boxset that came out in 2012 IIRC), the second is the original mix. So the 2007 remaster isn't in there, which isn't so bad because those weren't really an improvement over the originals.UltraMagnus wrote:Andreas89 wrote:I'd have to mention the entire Blind Guardian discography. Yep, for sure. I was going to list that one but if I start listing great Christian albums with poor production, we could be here all dayalldatndensum wrote:Mercy Rule - Overruled

Here are a couple that come to mind:
Saint - Warriors Of The Son (1984)
Vengeance Rising - Human Sacrifice (1988) (kinda works in its favor though!)

Re: GOOD albums, BAD production!
The original Human Sacrifice demo was far worse - at least they beefed up the sound quality with the album release. I had the demo from Roger because the band did an interview for my fanzine which was on side 2. But honestly, the production was horrific.UltraMagnus wrote:

Warriors of The Son, to this day I find it unlistenable. I have heard that the later version is better, but I have not heard it.
I just don't care for the songs enough to go out of my way.

Considering that a lot of these classic albums had minuscule budgets compared to their secular counterparts, that really goes without saying. To be honest, I am amazed that some of these albums were as good as they were.

I really like the material on Warriors, but yeah the production is...

They didn’t remaster Warriors, they re-recorded it, and it is MILES better than the original. It also has two more songs.

Both Tempest albums. THIN production, especially on Eye of the Storm. Considering that Pure Metal was able to release albums with much more punch around this time (ie, Bride's Show No Mercy and Whitecross S/T), I wonder what went wrong with those two.

Re: GOOD albums, BAD production!
Perhaps because they signed Tempest by mistake they weren’t interested in investing too much in them.

from Christian Tape Underground, writing about the other Tempest...
https://christiantapeunderground.wordpress.com/2020/04/04/tempest-annihilation-of-the-wicked/
This is one of the two infamous Tempests that formed a weird chapter of Christian metal history. It seems that Pure Metal wanted to sign this Tempest from Ohio, but they sent their offer to the Tempest from Indiana led by Mick and Jamie Rowe (who later went on to sing for Guardian). No one seemed to notice that it was the wrong band until it was too late. So this tape is a tale of what could have been. Many labels have wanted to re-issue this demo through the years, but it seems the band is not having it. Too bad. This is one killer slab of thrash metal. The first song starts off with some nice bass guitar work underneath a skit that compares Satan to a jack in the box. And then just starts thrashing away. This is the thrash that you heard on Headbanger’s Ball, but didn’t exactly follow the Big 4 – some speed metal, some Overkill, some Metal Church power metal, etc. And lots of bass soloing – all three songs on side 2 are bass solos (no other instruments). Of course, the constant focus on hell gives it a Grim Reaper feeling, but just from the other side. The songs can be found pretty easily online if you look around.
Re: GOOD albums, BAD production!
^That's bizarre that Pure Metal wouldn't notice because the 2 Tempests are like night and day musically.
Yes, sadly Warren Harris (and maybe the others band members) refuse to allow the "Annihilation Of The Wicked" demo to be reissued. It's a shame, because to this day it remains awesome.

Re: GOOD albums, BAD production!
Warlock-Burning the Witches, I wanted to get into this band, but the production on the cd (to be fair, the one I bought was the original pressing, maybe it's been remastered) made it unlistenable to me, and kind of turned me off of the band (though I do like the song All We Are).

Motley Crue - Too Fast For Love
It just doesn't sound good overall to me despite having some great songs.
