Re: DETRITUS
Lyrics to the new Detritus song:
Bright Black
I harbour no secrets just unquestioned answers
My silence unnerving like unaccompanied dancers
I’ll show you my treasure you’re blind to the value
You say that you hear me and yet you continue
Your monologue
Your diatribe
Your loveless god leaves you’re dead inside
Won’t stop (can’t stop me) dreaming (won’t make me)
While I’m (I’m rising) breathing (defying)
Can’t take (won’t break me) the fear away (can’t take me)
There’s colour behind the grey
Darkness (you’re blinded) hijacked (closed minded)
Clothed in (can’t see me) bright black (can you feel me?)
Deafening (don’t know me) silence (stare right through me)
Exposed passive violence
Time is irrelevant, measures just movement
Now is your moment but how will you use it?
In regret, jealousy, possibility, opportunity?

Re: DETRITUS
Yeesh... that doesn't bode well for fans hoping for Christian lyrics. I'd be curious to see the rest of their lyrics though.

^I agree, I have no idea what direction they are going in here.
The lyrics don't even make much sense to me.
They're like typical indecipherable metalcore lyrics.

Yeah, that’s not encouraging. Hope it’s not the paradigm for the whole album.

Re: DETRITUS
The song itself is a real banger, but I’m right there with everyone else in being concerned about the lyrics. There’s some lines in there that I don’t completely understand the meaning of if I’m being completely honest, but what I can make out seems like the writer is condemning someone he considers to be closed minded and unloving. There’s room of course to criticize self-righteousness from a Christian perspective, but this almost feels like one of those cases where someone feels like the church wasn’t engaging with their questions in the desired manner and writes it off entirely as a result. I hope I’m wrong about that, but it’s something I’ve already seen more often than I would have liked in the realm of Christian music.

Re: DETRITUS
Here are the 2nd and 3rd singles from the new Detritus album.
I found lyrics for the 1st song which are posted below.
Obviously they are taking the church to task, although they seem to be referencing a a Westboro Baptist / Fred Phelps type of church, then a Catholic church, which I feel is unfair. The Westboro kind of church is hardly representative of Christianity, it's total fringe. And the Catholic church is too easy a target and is also not representative of Christianity.
However I like the last section of the 1st song where they are offering a prayer and not just a bludgeon.
The 2nd song seems to be a rant against Pharisees but I cannot find lyrics for it yet.
Bloodstained Glass
Blind lead the blind to the altar call
And if God hates fags then he hates us all
Barricade the doors and defend the walls
‘Cause if you let me in I might infect you all
Nice smiles on all the right faces
Dark words to separate the races
Be seen in all the right places
And your tithes pay the lawyers for the litigation cases.
Poison fruit that we yield
Ancient bloodline congealed
Scattered bloodstained broken glass left where we once kneeled
As we blacken the sun
We deny what we’ve done
Shattered dreams passed from fatherless father to son
Blood like tears from a crown of thorns
Heads bowed in shame as the Father mourns
Bishop’s move, sacrifice the pawns
Sun eclipsed as a new day dawns
Truth will wait until tomorrow
Justice dies in the lies we swallow
Emptiness of the thoughts we borrow
As we follow the hollow to wallow in sorrow
There its more to find
Free the tethered mind
Leave this shame we bore behind
Spirit show the way
End the games we play
Father teach us how to pray
Deep humility
Betwixt the sacred three
Only you can show me who to be
Heaven come to earth
Quiet the lies we’ve heard
Show the worthless of their worth

Don't read to into it, just tired of the Christian bashing. Sure, there's stuff to call out, we're supposed to, but this song feels too cliche in that regard.

Re: DETRITUS
^I'm right there with you BR. There are MORE than enough songs from the secular scene calling out the hypocrisies and failings of the church that any more coming from within seems unnecessary 99% of the time. I think it's also oftentimes justified as a means of finding common ground with the unbelievers and thus building some rapport/trust to eventually share the Gospel, though that "tactic" is flawed for numerous reasons IMO. (Not saying that's what Detritus is necessarily doing, and the last stanza of that song is quite good so as was mentioned above, at least they're not focused solely on the criticisms.)
I read somewhere that the singer is a minster of the Church Of England though, for what that's worth.

Re: DETRITUS
I think it’s a fine line. We must be careful to deal with the log in our own eye and not just the speck in our brother’s. But we do see Paul criticizing churches (e.g. 1 Corinthians) so it’s not that there’s never a place for it. I think the key is that Paul’s criticisms come from a place of deep love for the church. A lot of Christian bands out there who attack the church do not necessarily seem to have that same love and commitment to the church.
Of course, I’m not ascribing any of this to Detritus.

For example, the new Five Iron Frenzy bothers me lyrically. But some of, say, Rez’s more challenging lyrics, do not.
Re: DETRITUS
Bottom line right now is that Detritus do not seem to be projecting a clear message at this time. We see their lyrics but are not sure exactly where they're coming from or what they're trying to achieve.
With situations like this, I am concerned about Christians who rush out and buy their album because they're excited that a long-lost band is back, only to be disappointed or confused. That's why I'm a firm believer in not buying out of emotion or impulse, but doing a little due diligence first. In the internet age, that kind of homework is extremely easy.

Unrelated to this discussion but thanks to it I just discovered that Perpetual Defiance and If But For One remasters are now on Spotify.

Re: DETRITUS
Some of our old favorites from the past have been caught up in today’s PC culture and “progressiveness”. It’s all vague and watered down (if they even are still believers).
I think bands in Europe are even more led astray because of the overall distancing from tradition and Christianity. Latin America and the United States are the strongholds. Poland is one of the few countries in Europe where Christianity is still strong.
I still like Seventh Angel (and their last album was good), but I know they are secular now. Just like the band Trouble. They have some spiritual content, but they are not anchored to it.

Sadly, the USA isn't much of a stronghold anymore. Obama was correct when he said we were no longer a Christian nation and we see it in almost every part of life. We okay and justify things that we know to be sinful. Our dedication to the church is dying more every day. With the cancel culture so prevalent, more and more believers are just staying quiet about their faith as they don't want to be the next person who feels the blunt of the media when we "offend" someone.
It isn't just musicians who have fallen to political correctness and progressiveness. This is affecting every area of the Christian faith, and I believe we are now in what 2 Thessalonians calls "The Great Falling Away" before the return of Christ.
I will stop there so that the focus can return to discussing the band Detritus. I don't wish to derail this further.

Re: DETRITUS
To your point, I just read on CBN that Max Lucado apologized to the LGBT community for preaching a sermon in the past about Biblical marriage. Exactly what he's apologizing for I don't know, but he's been under fire from the Left's cancel culture lately. I initially felt disappointed and wonder if now he'll change his preaching?alldatndensum wrote:It isn't just musicians who have fallen to political correctness and progressiveness.
In any case, to be fair we don't know exactly where Detritus is coming from yet. I think this would be a good situation for a Christian podcast or fanzine to consider interviewing them. Not in a confrontational way but just in a casual, informational way. And hopefully with full acknowledgment of all of their contributions and achievements within the music community so far. I will recommend that to Wildman and Steve as a start.

Re: DETRITUS
We as Christians cannot back down from what we truly believe. This disappoints me greatly with Lucado. I remember a line from a song by Monsterus a few years back that applies now, "Are you gonna bow if they make you bleed?"
