Favorite Westerns (and actors)
I have been on a Western movie binge recently
I was wondering if their was any other fans around these parts (<------ that was bad I know )
I have watched them since I was little but I am now realizing how much I really like them
So what are your guy's favorite movies? (top 5,10, etc.)
Do you have a favorite actor for westerns?

Love me some westerns and you can't get better then Eastwood. The Good The Bad and The Ugly and the Outlaw Josey Wales are great. I also like Tombstone, Unforgiven, True Grit and if you want a western spoof, Silverado.

Re: Favorite Westerns (and actors)
Once Upon A Time In the West (1968 - Sergio Leone film with Chuck Bronson that goes unnoticed in America)
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)
She Wore A Yellow Ribbon (1949)
Johnny Guitar (1954)
The Searchers (1956)
High Noon (1952)
Hang 'em High (1968 - underrated Clint flick - hanging scene doesn't get anymore intense)
Blazing Saddles (1974)
Lonesome Dove (1991)
I really can't think of a western that I've truly liked from the past 25 years.

Re: Favorite Westerns (and actors)
Westerns seem to be a lost art nowadays. The remake of The Magnificent Seven was a good one, as well as The Hateful Eight, although I haven't had the urge to rewatch the latter. Like most everyone else, my favorites are older westerns. Some of my favorites are...
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Pale Rider
High Plains Drifter
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Tombstone
Unforgiven
Big Jake
The Sons of Katie Elder
Young Guns
Silverado
I also enjoyed the TV show Hell on Wheels. The longer it was on, the better it got.

I love The Searchers!
I need to watch the second half of your list
Big Jake is a favorite of mine, haven't watched a single Eastwood film yet, mainly because of warnings of intense scenes, I will scope out what will be appropriate for me, and will watch a fewmetaldude wrote:Westerns seem to be a lost art nowadays. The Adventures Of Brisco County, Jr.
This was one of my favorite shows as a kid. My dad, sister, and I used to watch it together on Saturday mornings which is a fond memory of mine. You can find it for cheap on DVD which is definitely worth picking up! My wife and I watched the series together more recently and really enjoyed it. It's fun, light-hearted, clever, and well written.
Not *quite* a western since it takes place in Australia... but The Proposition is amazing. It's very violent though and definitely earns its R-rating so I recommend hesitantly.

I was going to say Rio Bravo ... but you already did. Good one.
A decent, fairly recent one is Quigley Down Under (Tom Selleck & Alan Rickman).

^I thought that maybe my fandom for Brisco was just nostalgia but re-watching the series again, I can confidently say that it's just a really great show! Definitely check it out.

Re: Favorite Westerns (and actors)
With me not being a fan of westerns, looks like I am in the minority again.
Re: Favorite Westerns (and actors)
I started watching The Ballad Of Cable Hogue which started out really good but we ended up turning it off halfway through once a priest character began emotionally manipulating a young widow to sleep with him. I am generally a big fan of Sam Peckinpah (the director) but this one was so full of anti-Christian and slimy characters that watching it just wasn't enjoyable whatsoever. I would not recommend.
A rather obscure western Veronika and I watched a while ago which I would recommend however is From Noon Till Three. It is very unique: I've never seen a movie quite like it - which I greatly appreciate. I suggest not reading anything about it though, as it has a few twists and turns which will be much more enjoyable if you aren't expecting them. It gets pretty zany/silly as it progresses though, so don't expect The Wild Bunch or anything. (There's some PG-13 happenings in it but overall it's pretty mild FYI, as I recall.)

Re: Favorite Westerns (and actors)
Enjoy! I'll be curious what you think about it.
FYI From Noon Till Three has one scene towards the beginning where a man is looking to have his way with a woman. Nothing happens though. I read some reviews where people turned the movie off at that point before his intent was thwarted.

I dont really care much for westerns either, save for Blazing Saddles, which may or may not count. That said, I did see a clip of The Wild Bunch on some countdown of action scenes in films and it looked pretty intense, maybe that's one I'll have to check out.alldatndensum wrote:With me not being a fan of westerns, looks like I am in the minority again.

The Wild Bunch is very good. I haven't seen it in years though. If you don't like westerns in general, my guess is that you won't like it however. I'd consider it pretty prototypical for the genre and has influenced many others after it. On a side-note, Mel Gibson is currently set to direct a remake which should be interesting, especially given the ultra-violence (for the time) of the original and Gibson's love for violence in his movies.
