Going to see Disciple on Dec. 2!!!
Disciple will be playing at Rocketown in Nashville on Dec. 2 and I am going. I asked a young man who used to be in my youth group to attend with me. I am sure that, since Rocketown is mostly a teen outreach, I will be one of the older people in attendance. I don't care as I love good music.
Who else is playing that night? Well, I am glad you asked! (Ok, you didn't ask but I assumed you would.) Here's the lineup for the night:
Appearing that night:
Fanghorn (never heard of 'em)
The Persuaded (never heard of them)
Theocracy (yes, THAT Theocracy)
DISCIPLE

Way to go burying the lead story.
I've seen Disciple before, but the last time I've seen them was 2011 or so. So they've undergone an incarnation or two of band lineup since then. Personally, I'd still love to see the original lineup and style of the band. The last couple albums didn't do much for me. Their old stuff rocked my face off.

I'm not a fan of Theocracy so I am not excited about seeing them.
I have enjoyed every Disciple album including their more recent ones. While different members have come and gone, Kevin is still the primary songwriter. Thus, they still sound like Disciple even when they steer their sound in a different direction. I have been a fan of theirs since I first heard of them. They are the reason that I am going to this show.

Theocracy is opening for them? There is no justice in the world.

Sure there is! Disciple has been around longer, has a bigger following with some radio support over the years, and has probably sold more units of their albums. That's how it's done, folks!

I hope playing with Theocracy finally gets Disciple the attention they deserve.

Theocracy is as good or better then most the bands in the style they play while Disciple has been chasing the latest sound their whole career. I like early Disciple but now they are way too formulaic.

Well because Disciple has been doing that they have sold more albums and remained popular despite being around for over 25 yearsBlack Rider wrote:Theocracy is as good or better then most the bands in the style they play while Disciple has been chasing the latest sound their whole career. Sure but I don't measure everything by sales. And I guarantee you Theocracy gets more love by the secular world because of how good they are.
Not hating on Disciple here either.

Man, the show was killer! My ankle that a broke a few years ago is killing me this morning, though, from being in a venue that was standing room only and on my feet from 6 to almost midnight. Rocketown SO needs a place for people to sit and watch the show if they so choose.
The first band up was The Persuaded. Meh..... To me, they were the stereotypical half singing/half growling or burping or whatever they call that mixed with generic chugga-chugga chords that sounded like they were in the same key all night. Bor-ing!!!!
Up next was Fanghorn out of Georgia. They are slowly working on a new album and will be a band to watch out for. They do this low tuned doomy metal with gruff vocals but not growling. The vocalist reminded me, at times, of people like Randy Rose, Danzig, and Zakk Wylde from Black Label Society. I definitely want to hear more!
Then there was this band......what was their name again???? Oh, yes! Theocracy! Great live band with all the changes in the music. Most of the crowd was singing along. I only knew the one Christmas song they did which was "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel". They started off with several songs that were under the 5 minute mark which I loved. They ended with "I Am" which is somewhere around 11 minutes. Longer songs like that are definitely made for live performance as you really get to see all the band has to do to accomplish an epic track and how worn out the were after an hour of playing. They still aren't my favorite, but I do have a new appreciation for them. The 20 year old friend of mine that went with me loved them, though. So, there is hope for a new generation!
Then up came the mighty Disciple. I was disappointed a little by them. At this time, they do not have a bass player. I expected any keyboard parts to be pre-recorded. I didn't expect all their bass parts to be done the same way. Even with one part missing, though, the band made up for with enthusiasm. The two guitar attack was awesome! Even songs that don't really have leads on the album got the treatment last night. They did mostly material from the albums "O God, Save Us All" and "Attack". They did do the title track from "Back Again". They also did this super long medley of the old stuff from "This Might Sting A Little" through "Southern Hospitality". They did a cover of Bon Jovi's "Living On A Prayer" and threw in a heavy version of Chris Tomlin's "Our God Is Greater". Disciple are great fun live and know how to work a crowd.
The crowd was definitely there for Theocracy and Disciple. There were probably 50 people that left after Theocracy that didn't come back in for Disciple.
The average age at the show looked to be around the 40-45 mark with there being some that were probably in their late 50s or early 60s. There were a couple of teens there with their parents and one couple brought their baby.
All in all, it was a great night. Now I am wondering if I should go see The Letter Black in January at the same building.

Sounds fun and it's nice Disciple added some guitar leads, they need to add that back into the music on albums.

Excet for the self-titled "Disciple" album, they've always incorporated some solos. I think just using them on some, but not all, tracks helped them to walk the line between metal and modern rock which appears to be the direction they've wanted to go since that time.

Sounds like an awesome show! I really wish my band could've played that show. I'd really like to do a show with Theocracy one day. I think it would be a great variety of different types of metal for the audience.
Re: Going to see Disciple on Dec. 2!!!
Sounds pretty great!
Last year when I saw Disciple, they had the bass track as well, very similar track list, but I am super jealous that they played Livin On A Prayer and the Chris Tomlin song sounds like it would be epic
When I saw them the only older song that they played was Big Bad Wolf, interesting side note, before the show that I was helping host, I asked them if they would play "Back Again", it is my all time favorite Disciple song, and they did
I can dream a little that because of me asking to play it, they kept it in their set list
