Hmm, I expected more... anger. Pity!Kerrick wrote:Andreas89Iron Maiden - Dance of Death
Some good and great songs, but painful lack of self-editing. Plus, Dickinson isn't the best singer around, never was.
Now, let's see how triggered Kerrick gets
Instant ban. Andreas, it's been nice having you here but you've crossed a line. Adios. (Juuuuuuuuust kidding!)
Dance Of Death was one of my first Maiden albums and has remained one of my favorites. Like any album of theirs, it does have a few fillers, but the title track, Paschendale, Rainmaker, and Face In The Sand are all so good!
Anyway, the song Paschendale justifies having the album for me. The title track is also great, but I'm quite well-versed in WW1 and have visited several landmarks of the trench war. Somehow it's incredibly unsettling and at parts even worse than WW2 (which was "worse" overall, in a way). Music concerning the trench war always has something special for me, and Iron Maiden simply nailed it. On top of that, my history teacher from highschool mentioned the song as WW1 still having a deep impact, which led me to buy the album. That must not have been his intention, because he was more or less the kind of brother who considers metal music "evil". Anyway, good memories!

Today feels like a experimental/progressive metal day. If you have suggestions I'm up for it

Speaking of Maiden Im up to Dance of Death as far as listening to the entire discog straight through. Its really interesting to hear the changes and maturity in music. Havent given anything post No Prayer for the Dying much listen before but Im enjoying post reunion stuff more then I thought I would, I always preferred stuff up to Somewhere In Time.

Right on. Their first three post-reunion albums are some of my favorites of theirs. The Final Frontier and The Book Of Souls both have some decent songs on them but aren't nearly as good IMO as Brave New World, Dance Of Death, and A Matter Of Life And Death.

I would say Fear of the Dark is almost as bad as the Blaze Bailey era stuff. It really stuck out to me that it has a "going through the motions" sound and feel. Really hated it.

No Prayer... is my least favorite of theirs. Fear... has a few good tracks on it though it's mostly filler; I don't hate it but it's far from my favorite! I actually don't hate the Blaze-era as most people do. I like the dark atmosphere of The X-Factor (even though there are definitely a few cringe-worthy moments of Blaze trying to hit those high notes) and Virtual XI has some great tunes on it too. If you compare those to Somewhere In Time or Powerslave, sure they're gonna fall pretty flat. But on their own, they're decent albums IMO.

The "Let it Rip" style of this band is really hittin' the spot today.
