Subgenres of Metal!

What is your favorite subgenre of Metal? Metal being the meta-genre of course!

Since there can be only 10, I did the best I could to include all. But I did not have room for:

Alternative Metal
Metalcore
and
Nu Metal

sorry. But those are my least favorite genres and I only had so much room.

DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!  Followed closely by black metal.

Black metal.
Its probably the most mocked metal genre of metal, but for those who comprehend it fully... no genre of music parallels.

If you're going to lump pop metal with glam metal, you could have just said "Glam metal and radio metal" and covered the lot.

Tough one...ask another day and I might say traditional or progressive. In the end, I've always had a soft spot for some good THRASH.

Glam Metal is the same thing as Pop Metal. Just another name for it. Much like Sleaze Metal and Hair Metal. All the same monster.



My favorite would be Heavy Metal. Followed by Glam Metal and Power Metal.

Why is heavy metal a subgenre?  It's the main genre, everything else is a sub.

It's a subgenre of Rock.

how bout Gangsta Metal ?

Death Metal, followed closely by Metalcore. Black Metal is a distant third.

Aaron, well there is Rap Metal (though I had no room for it in the poll). I guess that's the closest to Gangsta' you're gonna find!

The way he's using it, and the way a lot of metal scholars use it, "heavy metal" really refers to "classic metal" that came before the fragmentation of the 1980s.  Stuff like Judas Priest, Manowar, the NWOBHM bands, etc. that predated glam and thrash.

I voted Traditional I find when I listen to Metal, its stuff like Megadeth, Deliverance, Iron Maiden, Sabbath

but I also dig stuff like Venia and Autumn and Lacuna Coil
