Unusual ways you got into bands? Empty Unusual ways you got into bands?

Have you ever discovered a band in a way thats different than the normal ways to discover bands? For example, i got into Skillet and 12 Stones because the WWE used Monster as a PPV theme song, while "We are One" by 12 stones was the theme song for the Nexus stable (ironically, a villain stable).

Interesting topic. I would have to say, as recently as two weeks ago I had no idea about an artist named John Davis. John was in 90's "power pop" secular band Superdrag. I have always known who Superdrag was because they are from my hometown Knoxville, TN. Before they signed with Elektra (and even after) I remember playing them on the college radio station. Keep in mind I did not know who any of the members were, they were just another band i played on the radio and they happened to be local.

Fast forward more than 20 years to 2015. I was looking up information about my high school and noticed a section called "Alumni" and saw the name "John Davis - Superdrag". I thought "Waitamin! John Davis? That kid?!? I remember him!". As a senior I took art for an elective and there was a freshman in there who liked to talk music with me. So I contacted him and while he probably didn't remember me he remembered the class and the teacher.

So this is an unusual way to get into an artist but i picked up his solo effort "Arigato" and it is pretty awesome. If you like the Foo Fighters you will like this disc. He has 2 solo records, the first is more gospel influenced and the second (below) is heavier rock. While Superdrag is no more he has a brand new secular band called The Lees Of Memory. So he is one of those artists who is a Christian in a secular band.

I discover a lot of new music through old school message boards.  Whoda thunk it?

Seriously, while we all consider this "normal", this is not the way the rest of the world finds out about new music.

In 1992 I was working making sandwiches at Togo's Eatery. A crew came in that I thought were a bunch of skaters. Amongst them was a real pretty girl whose sandwich I made. I asked her who is she and her friends were skaters and she said no they were a band called No Doubt. She was very nice. In fact they all were very genial. Later when they were all seated to eat I went out to bus tables and talked with them. They invited me to their show that night and put me on the guest list. Even though I didn't care much for music that wasn't heavy then, I really liked them. After that, every time they came to the area they'd put me on the list until 1995 when they got world popular. About that time I began to lose interest in their music as I didn't like Tragic Kingdom much, mostly because I thought it was over produced. I was accustomed to a rawer sound from them from seeing them so much and from their Beacon St. disk.

This was one of my favorite songs.

As a young teen in the late 80's/early 90's I did not care so much for the harder CCM tapes my Christian uncle would give me as gifts (Petra and Whitecross, both of which I now appreciate) and I suppose I said something (eesh, rude of me!) so he gave me a gift certificate for the local Christian bookstore. I was in there to spend it and the unique and colorful cover art on Tourniquet's Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance caught my eye. Plus the title was intriguing... Over twenty years later, here I am! They are still one of my favorites.

I don't know if this is unusual..but I got into Kings x by chance. I went around to a friends house and at the time the only music I listen to was metal mostly death metal and the heavier kind Oh and the Beatles. Anyway he was into the same kind of stuff. One day I popped round and chatting in his room then I noticed a tape with a cover that struck my eye on the floor and I picked it up and said whats this? He said he got given it but didn't listen to it. it was kings x 4th album self titled. I asked him to play as I did not know what to expect from it going by the cover...is it goth, Metal....Well as soon as the world around me played I could not believe my ears a band that is heavy but has Harmonies like the beatles never heard anything like it! A wounderful discovery and a life long fav band was born.

Just for the record, Kings X's members are not Christian.  They once appeared to be but aren't now.  dUg Pinnick recently said "I have more respect for Jesus now since I stopped believing he is the Son of God than ever because of what he really did".  I'm not judging anyone for listening to them but I didn't want anyone to be fooled to think they believe in Christ.

I'm curious as to what Mr Pinnick is saying Jesus " really did " ? What was his point ?

No but they used to be at one stage or though they said back then they were not a christian band but they are Christians and believe etc. then Pinnick came out about being Gay and smoking dope and christian stores stopped selling their product....heck they even mention most christian bands back then they played with were doing drugs anf what not and did not like the hypocrisy etc...anyway So there was a time they were connected with the christian music scene thus I mention them and they are my fav rock band that is not metal.
