I really could have sworn that not that long ago Wintersun had their self titled album up for free download.  However I can't seem to find it now.  Was that a limited time thing or am I just completely mistaken

I doubt it since it's on the major label Nuclear Blast.

Coincidentally was reading Jari's whinging a couple of days ago, that the label won't give him money to build his own studio, and he lives in a small apartment where he has to practice unplugged.

Haven't heard that album in ages, but I remember it being good stuff.  I stumbled onto it while doing a search for Turisas.  I should get a copy of it one of these days.
