Do all of you know music?

It seems like everybody here knows music. I'm just a listener and don't know how to read music or notes and don't understand all the technical terminology of music.

It also seems like many here play music. I can't do that either.

Doesn't anyone here just listen?

I have no clue how to read music, but for my birthday last month my sister got me a midi keyboards so I'm hoping to learn...

Seems like there are a lot of musicians on the site.

Im in the same boat I have no clue how to read music or play.

But man I wish I could!

Yes, I "just" listen.  I don't play, even for myself, and am not associated with any band, label, or the industry in any way.

I took band class through middle school and high school and I used to know how to read music.  I could probably pick it up again if I wanted to.

I just listen. Never in my life have I tried to play a musical instrument.

when I'm in the shower ...

and no-one else is home! LOL!

In other words, under normal circumstances a tune needs a strap on it before i can carry it!  


I took several years of piano lessons when I was young until my parents got tired of threatening to beat me if I didn't practice. I played the trumpet in high school and two years of college, but have barely played since. I tried to learn guitar in college, but quickly decided I didn't have the patience to practice.

So now I just listen.

I have played guitar and bass in a few garage and church bands.  I cannot read a note of music.

I was in school band so, yes, I read music. Funny thing though, my junior year I joined my first garage band. Someone had donated a drum set and I lied my way into the band (I had never played before). Much to my surprise, I could play. That was over 30 years ago and I still can't read drum music.

i was actually a music major on college for 3 years. I'm one class from an AA degree in Music Education. I play the trumpet, Baritone horn, drums/percussion, piano, guitar/bass, and sing, all to various degrees of proficiency.

I can't read music but have a basic understanding of some parts of written music.  I play bass, guitar and the radio.

Not as much as I'd like. I've played trumpet for 7-8 years  and am now trying to pick up guitar. I can read music fine, but I know next to no theory. I'm thinking about doing a music minor in college and hoping to take audio engineering classes if I can.

Only thing i do is sing along to my favorite songs. I guess if i was in the music business i'd either be the lead singer or backup singer, but i have no interest in playing guitar or drums or even writing lyrics.

I'm just a listener too.  Can't read music and know very little about the terminology and technical side of things.  To be honest, that stuff just doesn't interest me, in spite of my love for music.

I tried learning to play guitar back in high school, but never got anywhere with it.

I USED a to just listen, back in my late teens......then Mr. Hetfield got ahold of me and I HAD to learn how to play. Yeah, I'm a musician, but first and foremost, I'm a fan of good music. I don't really think it's changed the way I listen, I just know "how they do that" now. A lot of what I listen to and enjoy is so far beyond my abilities as a player that really, all I can do is hear it as a "listener".......

I play guitar and bass. I also play a little bit of piano and keyboards too. But I don't know how to read notes. I just play by ear.

I tried to be able to play an instrument and read music in college, but I just don't have it in me.  I couldn't even tune a guitar after attempting to play for 3 years.  I came home from the first day of intermediate guitar class in college and tried tuning it for an hour and a half without success.  Then my roommate, who didn't own a cd to his name and probably just a couple of tapes melting in his car, came home from beginning guitar class where they just learned how to tune.  He was a business major who didn't play an instrument - he picked up my guitar and tuned it in about 5 minutes.  Right then, I quit trying to be a musician from there on out.

I also struggled to get 'C's' and 'D's' in a couple music theory classes - barely retaining a thing.

I was in band at school a few years so I used to be able to read sheet music. I played the Saxophone.

I also picked up playing the guitar from my dad. I'm not very good but I do enjoy getting guitar tabs on the internet and trying to learn them.

I play both bass and guitar.  I have since I was 15.  That's been 30 years now!

I recently started building cigar box guitars.  I have one 3 string that I made and have taught myself how to play.

I can't read music and never have.  I don't really need it.  I play by ear and pick up pretty quick if I want to learn something.  Even though I cannot read sheet music, I do write lyrics and songs.

I actually have a performing arts degree in jazz guitar (which is less impressive than it sounds as I never felt I really 'got it', plus I've forgotten half, and metal is my true love).  That, and doing saxophone during high school, means I can read music (again, way out of practice).

Rock guitarists have very little need to read music, and even in jazz it's not essential given the emphasis on improvisation.

Currently I have a friend building me a classical guitar, and I can see the advantage in being able to read in this realm.  Because the music is much less about interpretation, being able to read would open up a lot of music instantly.
