Dave Toschi, a dapper cop who became the lead San Francisco police investigator for the Zodiac serial-killer case in the late 1960s and ’70s, has died at the age of 86.

Toschi died at his home in San Francisco on Saturday after a lengthy illness, relatives said.

The Zodiac terrorized the Bay Area in 1968 and 1969 when he stabbed or shot at least five people to death, writing taunting notes and cryptograms to police and newspapers including The Chronicle after his kills. Toschi was drawn into the case when he was assigned to investigate the killing of the Zodiac’s only San Francisco victim — Paul Stine, a cabbie shot to death in his taxi on Oct. 11, 1969.



 It was the Zodiac’s final confirmed slaying. Like every other inspector looking into the saga, from federal agents to police in Vallejo and Napa County, Toschi was unable to solve the case. But he never lost zeal for the mystery, friends said.

1. Because the news was not released until earlier this week, almost a week late.
2. The first 2-3 after the news there was concern that it was a hoax.
3. People got confused because there is a jazz artist by the same name and the rumor started going around that it was he who died.
4. Dave Holland is not well liked because of his crimes against the 17 year old boy.

John Mahoney, a veteran character actor best known for playing the curmudgeonly dog-loving father of the title character in TV's "Frasier," has died, his publicist said Monday.
He was 77 years old.
Mahoney, who played Martin Crane, father of Frasier Crane and Niles Crane, on the long-running sitcom, died Sunday in Chicago after a short illness.

Steve McQueen copied Toschi's distinctive style of quick-draw shoulder-holster by wearing his gun upside down for the 1968 movie Bullitt. McQueen also modeled much of his Bullitt character on Toschi

Bullitt is great!  I just got the blu-ray [I've owned the DVD since I was in high school] and watched it with the wife a couple weeks ago.  I didn't know that about McQueen/Toschi.  Cool!

Pat Torpey of Mr. Big passed away yesterday, at the age of 64, from complications of Parkinson's disease.

My dear friends, I'm sorry to be the bearer of such sad news. Pat Torpey has been my closest friend in music for over thirty years. He passed away yesterday from complications as a result of Parkinson's disease. Pat was one of the finest human beings I've ever had the privilege of knowing, and the honor of working with. 
All of us in Mr Big had nothing but the highest respect and admiration for him. He is loved by anyone and everyone who ever met him. And surely one of the finest rock drummers the world has ever known. 
Please keep his sweet wife and wonderful son in your prayers. 
I Love You, Pat. You made the world a better place. We will miss you. We will never forget you. Rest In Peace, my brother.
