Zeppelin, Purple, Sabbath?
Re: Zeppelin, Purple, or Sabbath?
Never thought I’d see Led Zeppelin actually being underrated, but here we are…

Well, this is the Christian METAL Realm so it's not surprising BS would reign here. Go to a mostly glam forum and they'll prefer LZ I bet.
Re: Zeppelin, Purple, or Sabbath?
I get that Sabbath is the most metal, and I’m not really surprised they’re winning, but I’m just surprised that they’re winning by such a large margin, especially given that many of us have pretty wide taste in music. I expected Purple to be last, but I figured we’d have a few more votes for Zep.

Led Zep had their roots in blues which may be why some don't consider them "metal." But back in the 70's that is primarily what hard rock and metal was - it was blues based. Even Black Sabbath and Deep Purple and Judas Priest had blues roots (and jazz in the case of B.S.).

Agreed, I just didn’t want to have THAT debate over what’s metal or not.Constantine wrote:Led Zep had their roots in blues which may be why some don't consider them "metal." Me neither. It gets to be this ridiculous generational thing that goes around in circles and gets nowhere.Pethead wrote:

But...as one who was there when there was no such thing as a "metal scene," I saw where it all came from.

Oooh baby isn't metal. It's just not.
I get that some (a small minority) of LZ's songs were though. I get that they were very talented and hugely influential. They had some great songs.
Deep Purple were amazing at times, but were too unstable as a band IMHO.
No metal band beats Sabbath.

Re: Zeppelin, Purple, or Sabbath?
All 3 bands were crucial to the development of music's pinnacle: post-metal.

Well like I said, once this gets going it will only go into a lot of disagreement, a.k.a. nowhere.

This. This is truth.Temple of Blood wrote:All 3 bands were crucial to the development of music's pinnacle: post-metal.

As much as I love Purple, my favorite albums Blackmore did are Rainbow Rising and Long Live Rock and Roll.

You and Scott Waters agree, and he and I got in a big argument many years ago about it. I like and respect Scott but we'll never see eye to eye on this issue.
Yes, of course there was some blues in Black Sabbath. A metal band can occasionally do other things. But the BS title track song is not a blues tune. It's just metal. It's not ooh baby. It's dark, crunchy, and uses un-blues guitar dissonance. You don't have to be there or anywhere to hear the difference.
I'm sure many people called a lot of things metal back in the day. Just like they do with black metal, power metal, or thrash. But the majority doesn't define truth. If I say Emperor are bluesy, it doesn't make it so, even if I'm a "music journalist" writing for a popular magazine.

I thought the album Richie did with Doogie White was very good. Different but very good.

That completely misses the point I was making which is why I'm going to leave this one alone now.Temple of Blood wrote:

Re: Zeppelin, Purple, or Sabbath?
I wish more of the Tony Martin stuff would be reissued. The only one I have is The Eternal Idol.

Good news. It's coming out very, very soon and was remixed. The Tonys made a video together talking about it. Google it.

I think we can all agree that hard rock was very, very blues-based. I just don't agree that metal was more than 50% blues in its composition.

Here you go!
All the Tony Martin albums (except The Eternal Idol) remixed in a boxset.
