Greatest Petra Guitar Solo
What does everyone think is Bob Hartman's best guitar solo? I say Run For The Prize from More Power To Ya'.

None. He’s a good songwriter but his solos are…not good.

His solos are great, but they’re not flashy. They’re little leads that fit the songs.

I must correct those in error. It’s my pastoral duty.

Yes. I didn't say his solos are super flashy or the best part of the song(even though the solo is def the best part of Run For The Prize). But listen to Beyond Belief(song not album) and tell me that it would be just as good without the solo. Because it wouldn't.Pethead wrote:His solos are great, but they’re not flashy. Currently listening to his solos in the middle of the 22 minute live version of 'Back Sliding Blues'
No Christian artist did it better in 1976

The guitar interplay between Bob and Greg on those early Petra records is great.

I've never heard this before but, it's awesome! Bob is one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Secular or Christian.oldschooldoom wrote:Currently listening to his solos in the middle of the 22 minute live version of 'Back Sliding Blues'

Yeah, you'd have to pick something off of the southern rock era. That had the most guitar jammin'.

Re: Greatest Petra Guitar Solo
Bob Hartman and Mick Mars to me have some similarities. Both are not flashy solo players and play for the song. Their solos are memorable and don't go off into guitar wankery which they probably could if they wanted to. I think they are better guitar players than they put on record.
Songs like Magic Words, Rose Colored, Adonai (both versions), All the Kings Horses, Hit You Where You Live, Somebodys Gonna Praise Your Name, Seen and Not Heard and Midnight Oil has some serious soloing.
Songs that don't have much soloing like Praise Ye the Lord (written by Volz or e band prior to joining Pera), Second Wind, Not by Sight, Computer Brains, Shakin the House, Stand in the Gap, Dance and Sleeping Giant have songs that are built around great riffs and lead guitar harmonies that is hard to forget. Just naming these songs brings these riffs to mind.
I find the first 2 albums has some cool experimental soloing as well.

Re: Greatest Petra Guitar Solo
This is very accurate. But the "doesn't go off into guitar wankery"(which brings the Back To The Future dance scene to mind) made me think about the "Bob's solo" live track on This Means War! It's pretty wankery.Soldier777 wrote:Bob Hartman and Mick Mars to me have some similarities. Both are not flashy solo players and play for the song. Re: Greatest Petra Guitar Solo
I never really thought about it, but now that it's been brought up...
The one that keeps playing over and over in my head is the one from Disciple.
Although I'm sure if I gave my Petra playlist another listen I might come up with some more
(Incidentally, my playlist runs from Never Say Die to Beyond Belief, mininus Back to the Street)
