I get liking the song, especially the second half, but I can’t fathom looking at their 5 albums, all of which range from very good to incredible, and then saying TGoM is a top 10 song from all those choices.

I agree. Lots of heavy metal bands best songs are ballads. Metallica One, WH(S), Fade To Black, Inamorata(less ballady but still a ballad imo)

The number 4 ballads on Metallica's trilogy are my favorites in the albums

I tend to really like songs that start soft and slow, but build up to fast and furious. Gift of Music is a prime example of such a song
