Favorite song on Load?
And Metallica takes a nosedive.
There are good songs on Load and Reload and it would’ve been better as one album.
But as it is Load is a bit of a slog.
My favorite song is actually the first one, whose name I will not type.

I actually prefer Load to Reload. From Load I like AMB, Until It Sleeps, Hero of the Day, King Nothing, Cure, and Ronnie, while with Reload I only like Fuel, Memory Remains, Attitude, and Fixxer, and those are the bookends of that album, meaning there's lots of slogging to get through.

That might be my favorite, as it has a very groovy riff. Probably has the most profanity of any of their songs though (not counting Garage Inc). Have to finish the album first to decide.Pethead wrote:And Metallica takes a nosedive.

Re: Favorite song on Load?
Have not listened to the loads for years. I think they are good albums if we are not comparing them to their early works. Standing alone as rock albums they are good. Would have been better if they made one album because there are tunes that shine and others that are middle of the road.
I remember watching until it sleeps and just thinking how very Smashing Pumpkins bullet with butterflies wings, the feel of that song and video is.

Re: Favorite song on Load?
Metallica was my intro to the world of metal when I was a wee teenager and I picked up Load on CD pretty early on, so my perception of it is going to be tainted by nostalgia some... BUT I remember liking it quite a bit actually. Of course it's not in the same league as their 80s material but it had a certain melodic darkness to it that I was really drawn to. Like Dust said, on its own, I think it's a pretty solid album (at least, as I remember it; it's probably been close to 20 years since I last listened to it).
I remember particularly liking these songs too.

I think what really sinks most Metallica post-Black Album is bloat. If they'd trim their records by a good bit they'd be much stronger. And I say that as a fan of a lot of their recent stuff.
The real question is why Kerrick would leave the green fields of thrash for the burned-out hellscape of whatever else he listens to...

After listening to the whole thing, my favorite is Thorn Within. Probably the most metal song on there (though Mama Said is actually my #2, so that doesn't mean everything).

As a full song Thorn Within isn't that great BUT the bluesy verses are among my favorite moments in the whole Metallica catalog. I love the melancholy. The vocal harmonies sound so beautiful there. The short solo is also really beautiful.
There are better songs than Thorn Within in Load, but none of them have anything even nearly as great as that verse is.

I would say Until It Sleeps is my favorite. From Load I like King Nothing, Hero Of The Day, Until It Sleeps, Mama Said(I normally hate country a lot), and The Outlaw Torn. From Reload I like Fuel, Carpe Diem Baby, and The Unforgiven II.

You’re telling me Metallica made a country song? I may have to listen to that one just to hear for myselfChristian Thrash Lover wrote:I would say Until It Sleeps is my favorite. Listened to it. Does it really count as country since James isn’t faking a southern accent?

It's more southern rock than country.

I'd consider it soft country.MagnusPrime wrote:seth wrote:Listened to it. Does it really count as country since James isn’t faking a southern accent?

Most "country" these days is actually southern pop-rock, so maybe it could seem like soft country or whatever compared to the modern nonsense idk LOL!
My mother sings country music, so I grew up with all the old actual country stuff (pre-90s) and Mama Said sounds a lot more in line with a Lynyrd Skynyrd ballad than straight-up country.
That's just my opinion though.
