Ben Baruk releases debut album "Cosmogony" blending Tolkien with Christianity
Rio-based band mixes elements of symphonic metal, death, and prog metal on their debut album, offering a sound that promises to please fans of Epica, Nightwish, and Therion.
Rio-based Christian-themed metal band Ben Baruk released their debut album "Cosmogony" on Friday, May 3rd, featuring songs on the theme of creation that relate the universes of Christianity and writer J. R. R. Tolkien, famous for works such as "The Lord of the Rings," "The Silmarillion," and "The Hobbit."
Formed in 2014 against the backdrop of Christian-themed metal, but unafraid to address other faith-related topics, Ben Baruk is comprised of Maria José (vocalist), André Fernandes (guitarist and vocalist), Lais Cunha (drummer), Rafael Rodrigues (guitarist and vocalist), and Cadu Mattos (bassist).

The new album, praised by the prestigious Tolkien Talk portal, merges elements of symphonic metal, death metal, and prog metal, featuring well-crafted songs like "The Almighty Music," "The Firmament Chord," and "Trees of Divine." One of the highlights that promises to please fans of bands like Epica, Therion, and Nightwish is vocalist Maria José, with her lyrical and precise high notes.
According to guitarist and vocalist Rafael Rodrigues, the idea behind "Cosmogony" is to go beyond the Christian theme and explore cosmology in general, drawing parallels with the creation of the world according to Tolkien's work, specifically present in "The Silmarillion."
"Since the release of the first single 'The Imperishable Flame,' we have been receiving positive feedback on social media. We are very happy, and this is just the beginning. We want to go beyond being a Christian metal band and bring various themes into dialogue," explained Maria José.
The independently produced and released album also features special guests: Nahor Andrade (Dynasty of Metal), Melancton Samengallef (Cerimonial Sacred / Nadarkhani), Jordan Varela (In Conquered), Clayton Rodrigues (Rarmagom), Lucas Brum (ExNecros, Reckoning Hour), Samuel Gonçalves (Of Christ), Michel Oliveira (M.O Project / Judas the Other), Léo Gomes (Opposite Sense), Duane Keith II (Vision of God Records, Christ Rising, and Extinction Of Baal), and Ivete and Wesley Lanzieri (Lichens).
About Ben Baruk
Since its formation, the band has released several works, including "Vidas que Choram" (EP 2018), "What Love Is That" (Full Length 2020), "O The Deep Deep Love of Jesus" (Single 2021), and most recently, "The Imperishable Flame" on January 26, 2024.
The essence of the band lies in the fusion of symphonic metal with progressive metal, resulting in elaborate songs, broken rhythms, and a rhythmically not-so-obvious sound. Despite the Christian theme, Ben Baruk explores a general cosmology, understanding that all human themes are inherently linked to Western Christian faith and tradition.
In 2021, the song "Nocturnal Lament" – from the album "What Love Is That?" – achieved prominence by being among the top 30 Christian-themed metal songs of the year, according to CMW.
In 2023, once again, the band was recognized, this time with the song "O Deep Deep Love of Jesus," which was among the top 60 in the same CMW list. Furthermore, the band's contribution was acknowledged in the book "CHI Rho, Metal & Meaning," released by Heavy Music Artwork, highlighting its influence and importance in the scene.
The band's presence has extended beyond the musical realm, also reaching the field of visual arts. Belgian illustrator Christophe Szpajdel, responsible for the band's logo, included Ben Baruk in an exhibition in Greece
