Re: Bands With Reformed Theology
I lean towards Arminainism, that atonement is for all men. To me, the song that sort of expresses this even though the lyrics aren't that deep is FREE by Stryper. When I get into a band, I don't figure out in my mind if they are reformed, calvinist or Arminainist, or what ever. If I like the music and the lyrics mean something to me, that's all that matters to me. IF other people like their music, that's great too.

Frontman of Theocracy is Reformed, especially comes out in songs like "Nailed" and "Ghost Ship"
Makes me love them even more

I don’t deny that Matt Smith is reformed, but wouldn’t Nailed suggest Lutheranism instead?
Theocracy rules! (I say as a non-reformed Baptist)

Haha touche. Well let me take that point a step further and suggest that Luther himself WAS reformed, at least as far as the nature of the will, and bondage to sin goes...He is called the father of the reformation after all haha.Pethead wrote:Joelpz27 wrote:Frontman of Theocracy is Reformed, especially comes out in songs like "Nailed" and "Ghost Ship"

Yeah, Luther actually talked about predestination more than Calvin did. Lutheranism largely followed Melanchthon.

Looks like we can add Sorrowstorm to the list:

This is one of the more insightful and in-depth interviews I've seen; it makes me all the more excited for Sorrowstorm's music now!

You know something is different when you read a band interview, buy a book on covenant theology while reading...
then purchase the album.

Ha that is awesome!
What book did you buy? Our church's men's group recently went through a book on Covenant Theology which I found really quite helpful and insightful. It's called Sacred Bond: Covenant Theology Explored.

That book is such a helpful explanation of the basics of Covenant Theology. It's just about impossible to find anymore, which is a testimony to it's quality. I think Guy Prentis Water, et al's "Covenant Theology" and Michael Horton's "Introduction to Covenant Theology" are more difficult but more rewarding for really understanding how God communicates with His people through the framework of biblical covenant. They also help differentiate "classic" CT from "new covenant" theology (NCT) and progressive covenantalism (PC).Kerrick wrote:Ha that is awesome!

Growing up in an anabaptist non-creedal tradition (Church of the Brethren) I went with "The Mystery of Christ, His Covenant, and His Kingdom" by Sam Renihan. It's a Founder's Ministry release and comes from a Reformed Baptist perspective. I was also hoping for something readable and less dense since I am reading Jonathan Edwards' "On Freedom of the Will" & Stephen Meyer's "Darwin's Doubt" currently. Hoping it fits the bill.

Yeah it was a pretty good book I thought, though indeed a little tricky to find... In the preface the authors note that it's intentionally more of an introduction to Covenant Theology and therefore doesn't get all too deep. It still covered a lot of ground while being pretty thorough IMO.

Right on! The church we were members of back in CA was a Reformed credo-baptist church though now we attend an OPC here in ID which is pedo-baptist. My wife and I are still coming around to that idea, though as we've researched and discussed it, I do find the pedo-baptist arguments pretty compelling. Having some understanding of Covenant Theology helps a lot.

Actually, I should elaborate some... We're discussing baptisms for our kiddos with our pastor this Wednesday.

Silly band name, but if you're into metalcore with Reformed lyrics... then Ninjaloot might be just for you!

Ninjaloot - Sovereign wrote:Wake up you Christian
Wake up believer and see
What you've been missing
Because you sleep when you read
The lord is sovereign
He's in control of all things
Even salvation
So then by faith we believe
God says to Pharaoh
I raised you for this reason
So that within you
I would display my power
The Lord will harden
Whom He wants to harden
And so have mercy
On whom He wants to have it
The Lord is sovereign
He's in control of all things
Even salvation
So then by faith we believe
Does noth the potter have the right
Out of one lump of clay
To make pottery for purposes
Noble and ignoble?
And if that means
That some go to hell
Then so be it my God's still love
And if that means
That some go to hell
Then so be it
My God's still love
Love
Love
All glory be to He
Who's is the King of kings
And in His wisdom seeks
The good of those that believe
Speak the truth
Speak the truth
Speak the truth
All glory be to He
Who's is the King of kings
And in His wisdom seeks
The good of those that believe
Seek
The
Truth
And
You
Will
Find
It!

Re: Bands With Reformed Theology
Looking up the "reformed" and "Calvanist" beliefs, aren't they pretty much the same?
Coming up through the Southern Baptist church mostly, I would say I am 40% "reformed" and 60% Armenian. Yes, it is possible to be a dukes mixture of these as there are a ton of believers who are in the middle of these two trains of thought.

Yeah basically. I don't like using the term Calvinist because Calvin was just a person and the term suggests that someone follows a person rather than the true faith. IMO the Reformers helped get Christianity back on track from works-based teachings that were prevailing at the time. Calvin was (IMO, of course) especially gifted in properly articulating God's Word, but he was a sinner like you and me and no prophet or apostle.

I don't mean to offend anyone or to start any theological arguments here, but I always had the impression that Stryper was a bit more... discerning than that. I've never scrutinized their lyrics nor read any interviews or whatnot so I have no idea. But the few quotes I've seen here or there didn't give me the free grace impression.

I thought I had read something on one of their early albums that gave me that impression. But I’m open to being proved wrong.
