Both are doom/death. My Silent Wake is my favorite band second to Maiden. All of their stuff is fantastic! They are pretty eclectic: ranging from aggressive doom/death, gothic, acoustic, ambient, progressive... But at their core, they're doom/death. Here are some songs from their first three albums:

The Drowning is also very good. I've seen the MSW/TD split for criminally low prices. Both bands really put forth their A-game on it and is a great starting point for both!

I will check them out soon. But for now I'm on my second listen to the new album from the amazing band Whispered "Metsutan Songs of the Void" just came out today on spotify (my go to for music)
