The way bands look and dress - your thoughts...
What are your thoughts on how bands look and dress in Christian music in the past like Saint, Shout, Guardian, Holy Soldier, Stryper, Barren Cross and Bloodgood. Did they go to far to have that glam/classic metal look with the makeup and teased hair? Or was it necessary to get attention to get the message out? I think it was both helpful to get attention but many people didn't take the bands seriously which may of been a disadvantage. What do you think of bands that try to relive that look and pay tribute to the classic bands like Desyre:
There were/are many bands who dressed like regular joes like Petra, X-Sinner, Whitecross and Rez Band. This thread is in not way to judge or critize bands for their look but to have a friendly discussion. I'm thinking many Christian bands would of changed the way they look if they could go back to the 80's.

There is a certain look ( especially in the 80s ) that goes along with different kinds of music. I believe many of those bands simply viewed it as kind of package deal. They got the sound, and they also need the look. Marketing is also factor. You can look at many bands and pretty-much have a good idea of what kind of sound they have.

I didn't understand glam back in the 80's. I think it was just a few years ago when it made sense to me.
I doubt if they could go back that they'd change their look. I only wish they could go back and change the thin production.

A lot of 80s bands have been very vocal that they are embarrassed by how they dressed and looked back then...the hair, the makeup, the clothes.

Really? That's lame. That's like some kind of double loser realm. Lame then and lame now for saying you were lame then.NoOneIsHere wrote:d@v!d wrote:Dude, it's cool. People ought to be proud of what they did.

I believe Strauss and Clark from Messiah Prophet are among those that feel that way. At least I was told that.
A ton of secular bands feel that way.
I have seen interviews with George Lynch where he talks about how much he hated that look.

Perhaps that might be embarrassment over the general "80's look"? I know my mom always says "I cannot believe we actually thought that looked good!" when watching movies from the 80's.

Music is part of the entertainment industry... I have no problems with a band dressing up and going for a particular look (no matter how embarrassing), as long as the music rocks. What I do find sad is band members hired because they have "the look" and "attitude", but not the chops... a face on tour with the band, but need a studio musician to play on the album... that's more embarrassing than teased hair and makeup.

A good example of a musician fitting a theatrical role is Alice Cooper. From what I understand one of his shows leans more toward a theatrical production than a mere rock concert.
