STB has a great aesthetic. It would look perfect as a biker MC logo.

I do like that Gazing At Medusa cover as well.
Might as well flush that AB cover down the toilet.

I also like the reissue of VL. I like the color scheme better than the original.

Ammocas wrote:^ I prefer the original myself. A classic design and the font screams with a sense of urgency…which is what I believe the artist intended to convey. While the 2020 design is nice, the scripted font style doesn’t come across in line with the style of music being performed. There’s no sense of urgency. No in your face message.
Yeah, the new font also has a shadow that looks too much like the basic shadow that you can add on Photoshop, distracting from the original hand-painted cover art.
The 2001 reissue of Psycho Surgery had a similar problem with new font and extra effects that were clearly done on a computer.

I like the 2020 reissue the best!
It’s just like the original, but the color pops out more. The cursive writing is nicer too.

Horrible artwork. Absolutely horrible!
Who did this abomination?
Brian Ames. The same guy who did the Microscopic View covers.
He has done a ton of designs and layouts for famous bands. Slayer, Flotsam and Jetsam, King Diamond, Cannibal Corpse... etc.
The best thing of that 2001 POD reissue is that it had very cool new photos of the band members. But the cover is terrible and the overall layout is terrible too with almost unreadable font on the lyrics. And not only that but on the side label it reads DISSONENCE instead of DISSONANCE.
When that reissue got a new pressing it was released with the old cover art and new layout with a better font too.

I’m surprised Ted signed off on this.
Did he trust the artist and not have the time to ask for a redo? Or did he actually like it? On the 2020 reissues, he seemed to care about the quality.
The 2001 covers are very amateur looking (especially POD).
Maybe it costs more, but the old fashioned hand drawn or painted artwork is a million times better! That’s why I love the Seventh Angel covers. I also love the comic book style of Ed Repka. His Megadeth covers are amazing!

Rodney Matthews’ cover art is second to none… those Seventh Angel covers are treasures…he also did a great job on some Stairway album covers.

Yes, Rodney Mathews is awesome. He did a lot of prog and NWOBHM artwork. I love his unique fantasy style.
Another phenomenal fantasy artist (Roger Dean) did that amazing Asia album cover with the sea serpent.
