AOTY contenders so far? Empty AOTY contenders so far?

Post by seth Mon Nov 13, 2023 12:47 am

What albums do you think belong in the running for album of the year? Some of my favorites so far:

Adorned Graves - The Earth hath Opened her Mouth. This one is almost certain to be my top pick, unless something absolutely incredible comes out in the next two months. I consider this a near perfect album, and have been playing it almost every day since it came out

Theocracy - Mosaic. This one obviously had to be on the list. Not Theocracy’s best imo, but still really good

A Secret Ending - Hexaemeron. Death metal/deathcore that doesn’t suck. And that’s saying a lot. Really fun, energetic music that’s perfect to work out to. The lyrics are great as well, it’s all too rare to see a band stick up for six-day creationism like ASE does

Applehead - The Light side of the Apple. Way better than you’d expect from a band called Applehead. Not even sure what genre this is exactly, but I really like it

Any others you think deserve the title?

I presumed it would be Theocracy, but that Bride album just keeps thumping around in my head.  Not sure which one I'm going to go with yet.

My auricular attention has shifted so much this year (and 2022) that I've mainly been listening to YouTube and Spotify podcasts more than music.  Still haven't listened to all of Bride or Theocracy.  The last album that truly fascinated me was Applehead.

This time of the year is very complicated to me, as I work promoting bands, I usually listen more music for the guys that I work with, so isn't so ethical use these names in an AotY list, but I also have good choices.

AotY as a common listener:

HolyName - S/T

Sangue Inocente - Vença Seus Medos (Brazilian HC)

Michel Oliveira - Solus

AotY as promoter:

Narnia - Ghost Town

MS's Destroyer of Death - Eternal Reign

Theocracy will probably win for me. Its only competition is Fathomage.

In no particular order:
Wytch Hazel - IV:Sacrament
Adorned Graves - The Earth Hath Opened Her Mouth
Theocracy - Mosaic
Bride -  Are You Awake
Diviner - Avalon
AppleHead - The Lighter Side of The Apple
Martin Simson’s DOD - Eternal Reign
AfterWinter - Paramnesia

I just received Signum Regis - Undivided … today so probably gonna add it to the AOTY.
As this year progressed, it turned out some really great albums towards the latter half of the year.

I listened to the Bride album and tbh wasn’t all that impressed. Some songs were decent, but overall it kind of sounded like they were trying to imitate Guns n Roses, even down to Dale’s vocal tone, and not pulling it off that well

Overall I think Bride has sort of suffered from “Metallica syndrome.” An excellent beginning, but kind of fell off after a few albums and never recovered. I like a few songs from their later albums, but nothing like the first few imo

Red - Rated R

No idea why the album is called that lol
If you like music that is very melodic, but still very heavy, and might have some violins, this is a great album. I highly reccommend the song "Minus it All"

Cool!  I didn't realise Whitecross' album would be out in December, I presumed it would be sometime next year.  If it does end up being December, then that will be right up there (based on the 3 EP songs)

I keep a running list but it's hard to pinpoint an AOTY yet.
The closest so far would be Theocracy.

Definitely Theocracy like it is every year they release something, but I was pleasantly surprised by Narnia’s Ghost Town. I still haven’t listened to the entirety of the Adorned Graves album that might be up my alley but I wasn’t too impressed with my first sample.
