Ranking Megadeth Decade by Decade Empty Ranking Megadeth Decade by Decade

Post by Pethead Fri Jun 02, 2023 9:52 am

80s:
Peace Sells
SFSGSW
KIMB
(All these are quite good)

90s:
RiP (their magnum opus)
Countdown
Youthanasia
Cryptic Writings
Risk
(My favorite Deth era; all are great except Risk)

00s:
United Abominations
TSHF
Endgame
(Solid, and UA is among my favorites. I’ve never heard TWNaH)

10s:
Super Collider (yes, really!)
Dystopia
Thirteen
(Super Collider has some of their most memorable songs from this era. Dystopia is solid, but not particularly memorable. Thirteen is hit or miss).

I won't go to the wall for this list, as I'm not very familiar with the newer albums. I'll leave out those I'm not versed in well enough.

Risk

00s:

Definitely check out United Abominations. It’s a great combo of aggression and melody and it has his most Faith-based lyrics.

TSHF and UA are my favorite Megadeth. I like most all their stuff through Endgame. They lost me after that one.

Only thing I'd change on Pet's list is move Cryptic Writings to second in the 90s.

I really like all the 90s albums besides Risk. CW is a great album.

I love Endgame and I think Dystopia had some similar energy to it. I'd say it's worth a listen if you haven't tried it yet.

Having gone through their entire discography over the past few days, I’m gonna say it:

They don’t have a bad album.

Yes, Risk is not a good Deth album. But it’s still a decent album.

I couldn’t make it through any of the other big 4 discographies in a row without going insane. But I could with Deth.

Dave rules.

I don’t think they’ve had a great album since UA. I’d say 13 is as good if not better than Endgame, though. I find Endgame extremely overrated.

Maybe "great" is exaggerating, but I definitely think it's above average for their modern work.

I see very few around the net saying its great.  Looking around people even seem to like Dystopia much more than it.  It has flaws, sure but it's very rare to find a late stage metal band making an album that strong.  I can only think of a few.  I think it is as strong as their 80s work, which I almost never say about metal bands.

Meanwhile every middle-of-the-road normie metal website proclaims that Rust in Peace, Master of Puppets, and Reign in Blood are the 3 perfect thrash albums.

I’ve typically seen mostly praise for Endgame.

I do prefer Endgame over Dystopia.

I also prefer it over Reign in Blood, for that matter…

Things I don't like about Endgame:
1. corny intro that doesn't flow well into the opening actual "song".  Vastly inferior to "into the lungs of Hell"

2. grating Andy Sneap production that doesn't do justice to the drum tones and sounds WAY too digital

3.  Broderick is very talented but sounds too much like every shredder and not as distinct as Friedman or Poland

Rust in Peace should be considered a part of 80’s Megadeth. It’s a thousand miles better than the other albums they did in the 90’s.
