If you ever want to get more into the funkier, rock/jazz-fusion, jam-band side of Southern Rock, I recommend the band Sea Level. All virtuoso musicians, 3 came from the Allman Brothers (bassist, drummer, and keyboardist). The keyboardist (Chuck Leavell) eventually joined the Rolling Stones and has played with Clapton, George Harrison, David Gilmour, Gov't Mule, and John Mayer.
Sea Level is like a more accessible version of Little Feat, which is another good band to check out.
All their albums are very good but the most consistently engaging one seems to be "Long Walk On A Short Pier."
