I don't think the lyrics were really all that bad for the times.  I think it was the merging of two styles that had nothing to do with one another that made it awkward.  Had the same dude rapped what he said on a Christian rap album at the time, no one would have thought anything about that.  It was a poorly done, gimmicky track that the label probably convinced the band they needed to do to have a CCM hit.  It didn't work.

I agree they were fairly typical for the times, but that doesn’t make them any less terrible. 

The frustrating thing to me is that the rest of the song is fantastic.

Idk if you've heard it yet, but the first four songs on This Might Sting A Little are imo the four best rap/metal songs out there (plus Down by TFK, but that's more rap rock)

11. I Thought (7.8/10) Overall kind of boring but good main riff
10. On The Fritz (7.9/10) Fun, good melodies
9. A Little Sleep (7.9/10) Good riffs, decent choruses, but the rap parts are kind of weird, though not all bad
8. Map (8/10) Good main riff, but wierd vocals that slightly ruin it for me. Sounds nostalgic for some reason though
7. You Still Smile (8.1/10) Not my style of music, but it is pretty and emotional, with good lyrics
6. After I Fell (8.3/10) Interesting riffs, overall a decent song
5. Breathing Still (8.3/10) Interesting lyrics, very long, the most interesting song here, even if not the best
4. Speed of Light (8.5/10) Might be the objectively best song here, great vocals, but I prefer slightly heavier songs
3. Now & Then (8.6/10) Despite that, I love this song. The way the vocals sound, mixed with the guitars, is great
2. Belltown (8.8/10) Probably the heaviest song here, plus good lyrics
1. River Disturbance (9.1/10) The best solo of any D song imo, plus good riffs and vocals
Overall album, 8.3/10.

Something I just realized as far as Deliverance and rap, listening to Return to Form, the verses sound very nu-metal like (just much better than A Little Sleep)
