Parodies of Christian songs
We've all heard Weird Al perform humorous secular parodies of secular songs.
Most of us have heard Apologetix perform humorous and serious Christian parodies of secular songs.
What I've not heard a lot of is humorous or secular parodies of Christian songs done by Christians. I think this is an untouched market and one I would pay money for. I believe we should have a sense of humor and be able to laugh at ourselves.
In fact, the only one that comes to mind right now is Tim Hawkins' parody of "I Will Be Here" by Steven Curtis Chapman. The song is entitled "I Don't Drink Beer"
Here is the original and the parody:

Re: Parodies of Christian songs
I hate parody's....(especially when a christian band does a secular song )...Bands like Apologetic & the new Pastor Brad. Weird Al is just horrible also.. I dont like the one you posted but then again I dont like that style of music or Steven Curtis Chapman...
I do however like mashups..Love Rock Sugar's album...

To me it's a GREAT idea, especially in Europe where a non negligeable number of persons judge us like retarded humorless pedophiles, and honestly some personalities don't really help.
I just know Catho's version of Psy's famous song:

I love parodies! I have been a fan of "Weird Al" since his 2nd album way back in the 80s. While most people know him for his parodies of famous songs, his music is so much more. While he does get ridiculous sometimes with his comedy, his musical abilities are never highlighted on the parodies. If you listen to his ORIGINAL songs, you can hear just how talented of a composer and arranger that he is.
"Weird Al" has done countless tunes (mostly instrumental) for different tv shows and movies. He's done a series of educational videos to teach how the body works to children. He is quite the musician.
I like Apologetix, too. While some of their songs miss the mark lyrically, they are at their best when they go for the silly way of presenting a Bible story. "Story Of A Squirrel" is a great example. It think that the biggest problem with Apologetix is that they do too many songs too quickly that they lose the funny part of the parody.
I have no problem with parodies if done well.

Re: Parodies of Christian songs
Maybe Theocracy could do a parody of "The Christmas Shoes" for this year's Christmas song! (you may think thats too "serious" of a song to satirize, but considering that even many Christians think its full of glurge and they dont actually need to satirize the message of the song to do the parody anyway, it could work)

A lot of us have probably seen this, but I think it's awesome. I've run into one or two people who didn't like it for the cheese factor -- I thought it was pretty obviously an intentional part of the charm!

Cheese Factor sounds like it would be the ultimate name for a parody band!

You've GOT to check out the Swirling Eddies' Sacred Cows album. It is a parody/tribute album to some of the 80s/90s big Christian hits.

The first one was hilarious. The 2nd was funny with the voice but the music is horrid.
Re: Parodies of Christian songs
Over the years, as a huge parody fanatic, I've found that people either get it, or don't. They either love em or hate em. One of my buddies refers to ApologetiX as "Near Beer for Christians"
I grew up with Dr Demento on the radio every Friday night in the 70s as well as MAD magazine, Cracked and Crazy - read them constantly (still do)...... from there I got into Weird Al after hearing his debut of "Another Rides the Bus" on Demento's show (seen him in concert a couple years back). I collected Al's albums over the years as well as other Demento regulars.
Then I came to faith and discovered ApologetiX. Seen them in concert many times and dig them (in fact, we were invited onstage with them several years ago cuz we had the most people in our group*). Mark Lowry is also a Satire Master - LOVE HIM !
I also dig Petrafried, another Christian parody band that is just as talented in their writing and performing as Apo. Unfortunately they only dropped one album:
* This is me and my entire family onstage... I'm the geek between J and Karl in the yellow-ish shirt
I think my attraction to satire and parody is due to the fact that I despise real life.. it's kind of an innocent way of escaping my conditions and problems by laughing at songs or comic books that make fun of serious things. As for ApologetiX, I used to be a huge fan as I loved learning and memorizing Scripture in the very talented way they do it (as for today, I am sick and tired of them pleading and begging for money all the time, but that's my own little issue)
