Where I live there are all kinds of events, theaters, concerts, casino's, parks and restaurants yet people in their teens and 20's are always complaining that there is nothing to do here Shocked ... so what kind of things do people in the 14 to 30 age range like to do? Just curious

Ha, well I'm barely still within that range (I'm 29), but I love to go hiking, walking on the beach, go to breweries/tap-houses with friends [there are all sorts of local microbreweries popping up these days!], church happenings/Bible studies, movies, shooting guns, etc.  Plus I'm at work 40 hours a week so that takes up some time too...

So yea, Im 15,and I go to the occasional metalcore show every couple months. Movies are always a good pastime.
I participate weekly in a Youth Group, and spend time in church activities.
My youth group is tight knit bunch of about, a dozen kids.
Of course I am still in school as well, but I am home schooled so I sit around my house and do studies while listening to loud blistering metal.

I also love to fish and camp, when I get the chance to!

NOTHING TO DO Empty Re: NOTHING TO DO

Post by ThomasEversole Tue Feb 23, 2016 10:14 pm

Can I still answer even though I'm older than 30? ;P

Currently, I'm at work between 20-25 hours a week.
All these doctors appointments (cancer sucks) takes up 10-20 hours a week, though I've got a break for a few weeks. I'm sure surgery, being in the hospital and pain management will be a part of my life starting April.

My wife and I like to go out to eat and/or see a scary movie. (she sees the chick flicks with her friends so its always scary movies)
I go to sobriety meetings weekly, if I'm feeling up to it
I spend hours every week cleaning and taking care of my animals - I own a 5 bedroom house and have multiple pets, so, my wife and I have to tackle chores regularly.
My wife and I like to cook. If we both prepare a meal, I grill the meat, she does the sides. Sometimes I cook for her before she goes to work. Sometimes she cooks for me, if I'm not nauseous.
Netflix, Hulu and YouTube on the TV - I never watch shows, but a lot of documentaries and horror movies are playing, even if passively paid attention to
I call my mom every week. My parents live an hour away from me, and we spend a good hour + on the phone. (if I call my grandma, which is every couple months, its at least a 2 or 3 hour call)
Recording music is done at least every couple of months - I can't seem to stay away from it for too long. Spent several hours today recording drums.
I work out in the gym probably 4-5 hours a week - I'd like to spend more time there, but I get tired easy. Did I mention that cancer sucks?
I sleep more than I used to - sometimes I have to take 2 naps a day just to make it to bedtime. (where I sleep all night too)
I forum it up between two, sometimes 3 places - no one locally listens to metal so I have to be social online regarding that.

I spend several hours a day with my big dumb face in my phone playing games. I'd like to think its healthy brain-defragging, but its probably turning my brain to mush. Either way, I like it.

That's all I can think of for the time being.

NOTHING TO DO Empty Re: NOTHING TO DO

Post by Guest Wed Feb 24, 2016 9:33 am

I was raised in a very strict Southern Baptist household. My parents would burn any secular album I brought into the house.

I ended up rebelling at 16 and I started smoking cigarettes and partying. I never did crystal meth, but I drank and did other stuff I should not have done. But - alas - it is what it is.

I repented 3 years later at 19 years old and went to Bible College from there - and then I became a minister. Travelled the nation. It was a good experience.

Never did try crystal meth though. I had friends who tried it - and got really badly addicted. Destroyed their whole lives. I figured cigarette smoking was bad enough. Drinking too. I ended up quitting both thank God. Though I do drink in moderation nowadays. But that is not a sin for me.

There is nothing to do here but this:

NOTHING TO DO Pcb09-1%20copy_7cf4e502-980e-4d01-b303-535fabadc248

There is not much else here. No interstates, not many good concerts (and those we do get are country or older acts which is fine when it a classic band I want to see but tickets are pricey). Pensacola is 100 miles away as is Tallahassee but we never go to either. My kids don't complain because they don't really know any different but they are ages 6 and 14. The 14 year old stays busy with youth.

Which takes us back to the photo above. We go to the beach, normally very early in the day before the blistering sun comes out, or we wait until after 3 or 4 in the afternoon (and yes, the sand is that white, at night it looks like snow).

I grew up in a pretty decent sized town (Knoxville, TN) so I never got bored there was always something to do as a teen and a college student, especially on a large campus like UT. Never got bored at UT.

Beautiful beach Mike! Is that a picture you took? That is one thing I love. The beach. I live very far from the ocean - well - not too far - as California is not too far. Only two states away. But we only end up going once in a while.

But we do have beautiful mountains here - and lots of concerts and stuff.

Here's a picture I took of a mountain behind my house!

NOTHING TO DO Empty Re: NOTHING TO DO

Post by Guest Wed Feb 24, 2016 10:05 am

I guess it all depends on what you like, and the culture has changed rapidly as well with the digital age and social media. This could create the illusion of "nothing to do" because...everybody posts their highlights. You get onto a news feed and you're watching people's highlight reels- it appears they're out doing all of this stuff all the time with all their friends while we are sitting home in our underwear alone on the computer. Nobody ever posts on the feed a picture of themselves laying on the couch alone and exhausted looking like crap after a bad day, so then it appears that everyone else has an exciting life because again- it's a show, all we see are the highs of others. I think this can contribute to the feeling that for me, there's " nothing to do". Sociologists and psychologists have actually now coined a term " social media depression" in relation to this. That's my hypothesis.

I'm 35 now, and grew up in a rural town outlying a small city of about 50,000. I had 3 girls that lived anywhere near me to crush on. I was surrounded by woods in the Appalachian mountains, so I ran in those woods for miles and miles. I had weights in my garage and worked out there. This has persisted into adulthood (except for the 3 girls), I do the same thing now that I did as a teen because of my limited options, I developed a love for the outdoors. It has taken me to trail races all over America and internationally and I've raced with people from all over the world. I've been places that I never could have even dreamed of all because I laid that foundation and desire to be outside and see how far I could go in nature as a youth-because there was nothing else to do. I wish that people, especially young ones, could see that their nothing to do is an opportunity to cultivate a few skills and get really good at something. More isn't always better.

Mountain biking or trail riding is what I've been doing in my 30s.  Then I like going to the beach in the spring and summer.  Concerts are another fun thing to do but lately it hasn't been going that well around here for those, this year is shaping up to be better.

After going crazy for not being able to sleep for 3 days just from that one drink, I tried to kill myself and spent one night in the hospital to recover from that.

I'm glad I hated it. I've seen plenty of people use it and love it. I don't get it and I'm glad to be away from that and that crowd.

We live about 15-20 minutes away. Very nice to go when we can but it is the ONLY thing we have. Lots of places to shop and eat too. And Disney is about 5-6 hours away but that requires TONS of money.

Wow! That's amazing that you lived through that! Great testimony dude!

cheers

I'm glad I got away from that crowd too. Nowadays I go around people who are into all kinds of stuff, but as a light - there to help. Not to hang and follow suite. Heheh. That crowd is headed for destruction and in a hurry! Meth kills and tears apart lives.

Sadly, too many young people have bought into the notion that life is to be exciting and fun every waking moment.  However, they don't look up from their screens often enough to know what is going on around them.  They seem to think that the world revolves around them and that the world owes them something.  With all that going on, you'd think they'd be satisfied.  The young people there should come live in my town where there is literally nothing to do.  You have to drive 12 miles to the nearest movie theaer or Walmart.  The closest trendy mall is 30 miles away.  Concerts?  You've got to drive almost an hour to Nashville.  Casinos?  We don't have those here yet.

I don't go out in public unless I need to usually (unless it's date night or Bible study or something). I'm very entertained in my own home lol. I'm never bored between 8 cats, 1 ferret, listening to music, TV, internet, playing music, reading, writing... man, home life is awesome.
