Time between sets Empty Time between sets

Post by Theonymic Tue Nov 07, 2023 10:59 am

I work at a university, so I get to use the gym there for free. Most of the others exercising around me are 18-21 years old. There is definitely a trend of people taking a very long rest between sets - sometimes on the order of 5 minutes. I can just about squeeze 3 sets into that gap, depending on the lift. For a while I attributed it to people getting sucked into their smartphones, but then I read a post that got shared somewhere about how "y'all people who don't rest enough between y'all sets ain't gettin all the benefits," and I started wondering if that mindset has become popular under my nose.

What are y'all's thoughts and experiences with this?

I usually rest between 1.5 and 2 minutes between sets. If I don’t rest long enough my performance is significantly lower in the next set

Depends on the goal:

Hypertrophy?

Pure strength?

HIIT training (so you get your cardio)

It really really just depends. 🤷‍

Depends what I'm training for. Sometiems I just go ham and do 30 second rests, if I just wanna get it over with. But if I'm playing a numbers game, usually 2 minutes or I do a second work out between sets

Back when I did lift weights (8-9 years ago lol) I did high weight, low rep exercises and usually took 1-1.5 mins between sets. It worked for me. I don’t see the point of resting much longer than that, but then again I’m not a fitness professional either.

Is longer rest recommended for hypertrophy?

What do you mean by a numbers game?
