And regarding St. Anger: I always LOVED the snare sound - it was just way too loud in the mix. I really like the whole garage feeling of this album.
Sure, it's not their best album but in my opinion it's better than the long-drawn-out songs of Death Magnetic with 75 minutes of Mr. Ulrich's uninspired, one-dimensional drumming.

I know what you mean.  The fan re-recording definitely sounds 'better', and I do prefer it, but it also sounds like any generic metal band.  At least Metallica hit a unique colour here.
