I'm not too into this genre, but there's some great ones and I'm curious what everyone's top 3 is

No particular order, but I’ll go:

Marble Tomb: Dawn of the Vertical Flame
Evroklidon: The Flame of Sodom
Anima Mortuum: Goat Destruction

Here's the thing. Nu metal is one of the broadest metal sub-genres, everything from Limp Bizkit to Korn to Slipknot to System Of A Down. Black is not near as broad.

My top three are probably:
Divine Symphony - Reject Darkness
Antestor - The Forsaken
Grave Declaration - When Dying Souls Scream Praise
Honorable mention: Spätregen - Tagtraum

Above all of those would be Epta Astera - Feste Burg, but while that is black metal influenced, idk if it can be considered truly black metal

I don’t actually think that about all nu-metal (only some), but my point is black metal is also a lot more diverse than you think

Yeah I could tell you chose Nu because it's the easiest to make fun of. And some Nu does sound like that. But I've heard quite a bit of black metal and all of the production is absolute crap. I'm not the kinda guy to let production make my opinion change too much but black metal is just too far. And as far as I know, if black metal isn't Christian it's satanic.

Satanic stuff is a big problem in secular black metal, one reason I pretty much stick to Christian with this genre. But no, bad sound quality isn’t a necessary part of black metal.

I mean, a lot of the early black metal is lo-fi. But even some of the early bands went on to have high quality production later. Take a listen to Immortal’s latest, for example.

I know you’ve said you don’t like the vocals in black metal, which I can understand. But there’s plenty that doesn’t sound like static. From the album Steven suggested I suggest Via Dolorosa, Vale of Tears, Old Times Cruelty

I liked Goat Destruction but prefer their 1st album "The Return." It's a bit more lo-fi and gritty.
