Mort - Scrolls
Living Sacrifice - Non Existent
GROMS - Ascension
Honorable mentions:
Discarnated - Deus Misereatur (This would have been in top 3 if production was better)
Ethereal Scourge - Judgement & Restoration (I find myself listening to the top 3 more, but this album is outstanding)
Extol - Undeceived (another fantastic album that was hard to leave out)
Metanoia - In Darkness or In Light (Played this to death when it came out)
Crimson Thorn - Unearthed (Another one that got a lot of play time)
Embodyment - Embrace the Eternal (This is another amazing album, too bad they changed styles after this)
Paramaecium - Exhumed of the Earth (Would be in my top 3 of all time, but not a purely death metal album)

Re: Top 3 Death Metal Albums
I've never fully hated it, it's just nothing compared to the first two VR albums. It also doesn't sound like VR. It's similar to Risk from Megadeth. It's good for the genre it is, but it doesn't compare to the bands other albums/doesn't sound like the band.StevenCressler wrote:Glad you're finally liking Released

For a while you put it at #100 in your VR rankings...Christian Thrash Rules wrote:I've never fully hated it, it's just nothing compared to the first two VR albums. It also doesn't sound like VR. Ethereal Scourge came out about the same time as those bands if I remember correctly, all Aussie bands (lest I as I remember it...)

Ethereal Scourge is from Australia.
Both GROMS and Schaliach are from Norway. Both bands were featured on the Northern Lights / Norwegian Metal Compilation that Steve's label Rowe Productions put out along with Extol and Antestor. I believe Steve was on the verge of signing Extol to Rowe Production just before he got ill and it never eventuated. It probably would have given his label a huge boost. I don't think any of the Norwegian bands ended up officially signing to Rowe Productions.

Schaliach-Sonrise
Ethereal Scourge is neck and neck for 3rd place with Schaliach.
Becoming the Archetype, Extol, Deuteronomium, Pantokrator, Immortal Souls, and GROMS would round out my top 10.
I admit I haven't listened to much death metal the last 20 years, so I'm sure I've missed some stuff. I didn't know Saving Grace was more death metal but it sounds good just listening to it tonight. I thought it was a hardcore or metalcore band.
I still count VR-Released Upon the Earth and Mortification-s/t as thrash, although yeah they have death vocals. So they're a hybrid. They would both be in my top 5 too if I counted them.

Worthy mention: Extol - Mesmerized/Paralysis E.P.s, Underoath - Cries of the Past
Never got into Mort and I've seen 'em live too. Still, didn't perk my interest, but I know their big "hits."

I think there's a fair bit of stuff on that list that isn't mentioned much around here so hopefully it'll highlight some good albums for people to check out.
