Albums that stand out due to lyrics

What are some albums that, maybe, aren't the best album of the artist (though they can be), but just overall have really good lyrics, above average for the artist even if the artist always has good lyrics

Is this just another excuse to say good things about Assimilation by Deliverance? Maybe... but the lyrics on that are really good

And on the hard rock side, Awake by Skillet has their most emotional and personal lyrics, and as far as songs where the lyrics really elevate it for me, that does it a lot (though there is no song for me more elevated by the lyrics than Last Train by Holy Soldier)

Theocracy. Except their music is just as outstanding as their lyrics. Amazing lyrics can be found on all albums, especially songs like Mirror of Souls, As the world bleed, Laying the demon to rest, The wonder of it all, and so many more. I know I sound like a fanboy, which accusation I won’t deny, but they really do have some of the best lyrics I’ve heard

Petra’s lyrics are often as much the draw for me as the music is. Same with Steve Taylor.

This is where Tourniquet is above everyone. Steve is great too with a biting wit and intelligence.

That's Tourniquet in general, from the lyrics, to the album covers, to the song titles, to the song structures, to the various sounds in the songs. Broken Chromosomes is a great example, there is so much vocal and musical variety in that song

Very true, Ted Kirkpatrick was a creative genius. Broken Chromosomes is my favorite TQT song btw. But for most variety in a song, I’m gonna have to give it to Besprinkled in Scarlet Horror

The only reason My Epic became a favorite of mine were the lyrics. They stretched my boundaries musically. Their album "Yet" remains a lyrical masterpiece for me. This song in particular I've quoted enough and even mentioned using it at my own funeral:




There are actually a lot of bands in this style I ended up loving who also having amazing lyrics.

Theocracy has some lyrical wonders for sure (Absolution Day, Nailed, etc.) but also some real awful ones (I Am, The Gift of Music). I have no clue how I would rank them overall, lol.

I’d rank Theocracy really high overall, minus a few stinkers.

The Gift of Music doesn’t deserve the hate it gets, for lyrics or music imo. And I think I Am’s lyrics are really good, although I understand the concern related to it speaking from God’s POV. I do think it’s done respectfully though

As said here already, Steve Taylor.

Lots of artists draw me in with the music, but he has always made me check him out for his lyrics.  Very much like Joe Walsh, he puts a smile on my face, and surprises me lots of times with his lyrics.

Grave Declaration is clearly a cut above when it comes to Christian lyrics.
Their album "When Dying Souls Scream Praise" is like worship music set to extreme (unblack) metal.

Ancient Prophecy has really good lyrics too.

There's a lot of good songs sung from God's POV

During their rock years, Mad At The World.  Lyrically, they were awesome.

I would love another MATW album by the Rose Bros. Especially something along the lines of Through The Forest.

Five Iron Frenzy and The Supertones have some amazing lyrics, although the post-reunion FIF is weaker spiritually.

Rez band, The Crucified, Barnabas, Daniel Band, Petra….all these had multiple albums with great standout lyrics.

I Love The Supertones…and they are so not my normal style of music! Great songs, great lyrics! Also, Lovewar put out 2 spectacular albums with standout lyrics.

-Time Horizon’s albums are all great lyrically.

Steve Taylor is a lyrical genius.

I agree that Ted was a creative genius… but Broken Chromosomes was written by Lenaire and Ritter.
