Without meaning to, it is a little insulting towards the fan base as well. Seeing we LOVED what they did back then and wouldn't mind more like that, I guess we just want more chipmunk music.
What he should have said is that they are getting older and may not practice like they once did and therefore can't play like that. Or, just say we added a more modern sound to attract new fans so that the old ones can go ahead and not buy it.

It's no different than Iron Maiden's singer saying that they didn't want a bunch of old crusties in the audiences in their shows. While they are amazing musicians who craft strong tunes year after year, the young people just aren't into it because they see a bunch of old crusties on the stage. They know that this is their parents' and maybe even grandparents' music. Just the very age of these guys is a turn off for younger generations. While some will discover them and be awed, most young people just won't check it out because it doesn't look like them. We do the same with newer rock bands and other styles, too.
Knowing that, it seems like it would be safer to incorporate SOME new influences to stretch, but also try to give fans what they want, too. Without that, your fanbase is shrinking at an even faster rate. You can guarantee that the fans won't give two hoots about those new songs in concert if they even show up at all if you depart too far from your original sound. That has only really worked for Def Leppard as a lot of people didn't get into them until after they started going pop rock and that fanbase stayed with them. The fans of the first three records are mostly done with them.

Re: New Extreme!
it's a very mild bash, but a bash nonetheless.
that album is not as good as THIS album
granted, I have no further context than what is stated above,
but I didn't take it as bashing. I'm having a hard time seeing
the insult here...

Check out Pornograffiti (don’t let the title fool you; it’s got some good lyrics). It’s a fantastic album.Sevenoneself wrote:Never heard of these guys before, never listened to any of their music, so I have no context.
