Watchers of Game Of Thrones? Empty Watchers of Game Of Thrones?

Post by Constantine Fri Mar 19, 2021 3:01 pm

I know there was a GoT thread started here 5 years ago but the people who participated don't seem to be here anymore.

I paid no attention to GoT while it was on,  Partly because I don't have HBO and partly because I heard about the series and didn't think it would be edifying.

I've since come to learn a lot about the show and it's characters and find it rather fascinating.
Haven't watched any full episodes but have seen a lot of clips and have read about the plot and characters.

I have to say it's very well-done in terms of production and acting, but wow, the characters are so brutal.
On the surface the series seems like it's just wallowing in sin and wickedness - and it does do a lot of that.

But there are also some positive aspects to some of it, particularly in some of the character arcs.
A few key characters start off really wicked and really redeem themselves by the end, often sacrificing their lives for others in a noble way. It also treats characters with disabilities with a lot of dignity, care and attention.
The series also shows how certain characters gain a lot of strength and wisdom through a lot of adversity and trauma.

The series also brings most of the unrepentant, evil characters to some sort of justice.
It's not like many horror movies where evil just gets the last laugh.

I would never recommend that a Christian watch this series because of all the violence, brutality, and sex, but I know that some have.

I'd be curious if anyone has and if so, how it affected you and how you analyzed it through your Christian worldview.
And who were some of your favorite characters.....

I usually love anything medieval fantasy/sword & sorcery, but I personally found GoT boring. Watched the first 3 seasons with a friend and had no desire to continue it. Maybe I'll revisit it someday.

I watched until the last season when I just couldn't stand the extremely crude language, nudity and excessive violence anymore. It's a real shame because there's much more going on than just those negative elements, they did manage to create this epic fantasy feel.

It's been a journey. The unease has been growing very slowly but I had to make a decision at some point. Gotta have a backbone, you know Razz

I binge watched the entire series. It took me 2 days, drinking copious amounts of Monster Energy drinks and an entire box of Orville Redenbacher microwave popcorn! It was alluring and seductive. I confess that it appealed to my base nature. I regret ever watching it.

I would pay $$$ for expertly edited copies that cut out all the gratuitous sex nonsense.  I hate how they put that stuff in there. It's literally catering to the lowest common denominator,  but they know they'll get a few 100000 more eyeballs per episode just with rhe promise of boobies and raunch.

For decades soap operas have proven that you can drive the romantic portion of the story forward without gratuitous nudity and sex. Mimed, under the covers.

Grr!!!

David Benioff the writer, was graphically portraying the dark side of human nature. The shock value is what gripped the audience. It certainly was profane and not a series that should be viewed by those who endeavor to be pure of heart.

As believers in God, we are called to the doctrine of sanctification, that is to separate ourselves from this world filled with darkness and corruption. This is an ever growing challenge for christians in this age.

Jesus exhorted us to be careful where we place our eyes:

“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!" Matthew 6:22-23

True story:  my mom watched most of the first episode at first airing on HBO while staying in a hotel and I didn't see any of it.  The next day she told me about it and banned me from ever watching the show and I was in my 30's...

It sounds like you've been blessed with an awesome mom!

I went on a family vacation with my parents when it was first getting popular and stumbled upon it while flipping channels.  I didn't know what it was but watched a few minutes of it and thought it was just really cheesy and lame.  (IIRC it was the episode where Jason Momoa dies.)  By the time I realized it was GOT, I was really surprised that that's what all the hoopla was about haha.

The best thing the franchise ever did was give Hammerfall the inspiration for the song Take the Black.
