Frank Peretti - This Present Darkness
Question for the readers here: Is there a current author writing supernatural/suspense novels like this? I've been a fan since high school but his output is low (granted, better few and good than lots of mediocre) and he hasn't published anything in about 8 years. I don't have to necessarily agree with all of the theological minutia (I don't with Peretti), it just has to be Christian-based.

Re: Currently reading?
In our church's men's book study, we finished The Bruised Reed by Richard Sibbes last week. Sibbes was a puritan so the writing was a bit different style than modern books, but it was an excellent book, full of rich theology and wisdom - as well as being quite encouraging to stand firm in the faith. This week we'll begin With All Your Heart: Orienting Your Mind, Desires, and Will Toward Christ by Craig Troxel.
EDIT: that was my 9000th post.

When I was 11 years old I bought a book called The Twilight Zone Companion. 1982. I pull it out every few years and give the episodes a read. Been reading my old friend again lately.

I need to check out Peretti's stuff. I've had the Finnish translation of "The Visitation" called "Valon Lähettiläs" (translates as Messenger of the Light) a few years now, but haven't read it. Right now I'm reading David Pawson's "Unlocking the Bible"

^Supposedly Peretti lives somewhat nearby (i.e. same county) to me and has a super awesome house haha. I've never read any of his books though my understanding is that they're not the most theologically correct when it comes to demonology and such - at least, that's what I've heard.

Re: Currently reading?
The "Darkness" books are the ones that focus on angels and demons. Yes, they're at best speculative theology, but they're not anti-scriptural. The books are definitely Christian. People who badmouth the angel/demon theology need to lighten up and remember they're fiction...and really good reads too.
My personal favorite is The Oath. That's the one I'm about to start.
My personal least favorite is Prophet (too political for my tastes, others may like it). I haven't read The Visitation or Monster in a while but they're pretty good and far less supernatural. I haven't read Illusion yet.

Re: Currently reading?
And now I just read the follow-up, The Road to Cana. It's rather fascinating as the books are told from the perspective of Jesus (as in a first-person perspective).WildWorld wrote:Just finished Christ The Lord: Out of Egypt by Anne Rice.

Moving on to Frank Peretti - The Visitation
His dry humor shines through here. I like it despite that he described heavy metal as being "like a toothache set to music."

Re: Currently reading?
I recently finished Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey. Since then, I am now reading Caliban's War by him as well. These are the novels that the Sci-Fi Network/Amazon original series The Expanse was inspired by.
Re: Currently reading?
You might want to investigate Terry Brennan and see if his writing is up your alley. His work is not really supernatural but he does write thrillers. He and I were in a Christian Men's Group in the early 2000's. I don't know what his theology is like now, but his books do fairly well and get great reviews so it might be worth looking into.eatbugs wrote:Question for the readers here: Is there a current author writing supernatural/suspense novels like this?
