Favorite Genesis album?
Hello everyone! I'm a long time lurker and I'd like to become a bit more active here. Back in the day I was caledvwlch79 and avsherwood1.
Anyway... this year I've decided I'm going to starting listening to Genesis (both eras) and see if I like them. What's everyone's favorite Genesis album? I'm only really familiar with the Invisible Touch and We Can't Dance eras. Though I have started listening to Duke and I really enjoyed it. I've also got Foxtrot and Selling England By The Pound coming in the mail.
Thoughts?

Re: Favorite Genesis album?
I am a huge Genesis fan, have been since 1981. With the exception of the very first album, From Genesis To Revelation, I love all of their albums. My favorite would be Duke. If you enjoy Duke I would recommend Abacab as well. The great thing about Genesis is that the solo albums by the various members are worth exploring as well. Enjoy!

We Can't Dance is one of the worst Genesis albums imo. My favorites are Foxtrot and Selling England, so prepare to really be impressed! Peter Gabriel is the man in my book, but the first two Collins-led albums and Duke are still proggy enough for this critic.

I thoroughly enjoyed Duke (Abacab is on the schedule). Who knew Phil Collins was such a great drummer? I've been marinating in Foxtrot lately and I really like that as well. I agree that Peter Gabriel is the man! As for We Can't Dance...we will see. I actually liked the singles from that album but if it's full of pop-filler that will be a problem. Hopefully I take a shine to that one too.

I'm not too familiar with the earlier catalog, but I LOVE Calling all Stations.

Re: Favorite Genesis album?
As a child of the eighties, I was introduced to Genesis via "Invisible Touch" (through the radio, and also it was played over the shop where I worked as a teenager), and when I became an avid collector of music, I got into the rest of the band's catalogue.
My favourite one is the first without Peter Gabriel, "A Trick Of The Tail", but I think "Invisible Touch" is better than its reputation suggests, and I also must make a push for their debut "From Genesis To Revelation" which, I think, is very much underrated.
My least favourite of theirs is "Abacab".

For me, Greatest Hits is just fine. I enjoyed all their hits, the album tracks not so much. Invisible Touch has a lot of great tunes on it. As for songs, Abacab is my favorite. Love that tune.
This is the one I have. I think I found it in the 5 dollar bin at Walmart (and the Walmart around here no longer has a 5 dollar bin )

Glad you are enjoying your journey of exploring Genesis. Phil Collins is by far my favorite drummer. As far as the Gabriel era albums I like Selling England By The Pound the best.
Re: Favorite Genesis album?
^ Selling England is also on the schedule. Also, Phil Collins is starting to become one of my favorite drummers as well!

Re: Favorite Genesis album?
I happened to find this thread. I love the early Genesis albums, Nursery Cryme is my favourite*, with Foxtrot just behind. I studied music in a town called Pietarsaari, and two of my good friends from that time period have now formed a Genesis tribute band, including all the theatrical stuff. Even a fox head and a dress...

Re: Favorite Genesis album?
Genesis is pretty high on my priorities list when it comes to browsing CD stores for good 70s prog rock, partly because I like to check out the top albums from progarchives. Unfortunately their CDs are pretty pricey usually, and there are still plenty of albums from that era that are 1) still not in my collection, 2) really good and 3) way cheaper. So it's only Foxtrot for me so far, but I really love that album.

They put out quite the trifecta with Duke, S/T album and Abacab with Abacab being my favorite. I like them with Peter Gabriel but he's better solo imo.

Re: Favorite Genesis album?
I prefer Genesis with Peter Gabriel. I think Phil Collins era Genesis is a totally different band. Even though they were good during that era too, it's not really my Genesis.
And I prefer Peter Gabriel with Genesis. He's good solo, but I like his Genesis stuff more.

I love pretty much every Genesis album, regardless of who the singer is, but these three are among my favorite.Black Rider wrote:They put out quite the trifecta with Duke, S/T album and Abacab with Abacab being my favorite. I like them with Peter Gabriel but he's better solo imo.
Re: Favorite Genesis album?
I'm not familiar enough with all their full albums but my favorite songs from them are Abacab, Follow You Follow Me, Land Of Confusion, and Squonk (from the Trick Of The Tail album).

My favorite song is That’s All, because the hook embeds itself in my brain.

Right now I don't own any....I had gotten Trick Of The Tail in a CD lot recently and traded it away. I only liked Squonk but not the rest.Guitar Noir wrote:All great songs! The only prog rock albums I have right now are by Yes, Rush, Alan Parsons Project, Jethro Tull, Moody Blues, Asia, and Peter Gabriel. Also a few prog metal albums on MP3.
I also like No Turn It On Again, Reply At All, and a few others. I'm just not too familiar with the earlier Genesis material with Peter Gabriel although I've heard some of it. I do really like Peter Gabriel as a solo artist, and Phil Collins has his moments too.
Re: Favorite Genesis album?
I think Foxtrot is still my favorite, although that whole four album run from Trespass to Selling England By The Pound is phenomenal.
I'm actually not huge on Lamb Lies Down. It never clicked with me as much as its predecessors did.
Also I think From Genesis To Revelation is pretty good for what it is.
I prefer the Gabriel stuff, but I'm a fan of the Collins era as well. My favs from that era are A Trick Of The Tail, Wind & Wuthering, Duke and Abacab. There's something to like on every Genesis album though. Great, great band.

So much better than A Trick Of The Tail (except for Squonk, that song is great).
Terrible album cover though!
