Re: Best Death metal band
Looking through my itunes tonight, I re-discovered Divulgence--Future Seed. Released by Bombworks in 2012. It's great death/black metal! More people should be aware of them. Really excellent stuff.

Re: Best Death metal band
Drop Dead's gotta be in this conversation, although they were more death/thrash.
I love those old Disencumbrance and Oblation demos too, but I think that Mortification's "Scrolls of the Megilloth" and "Post Momentary Affliction" are hard to beat.

Drop Dead was not that good. Ok for a demo, but they don't belong in a "Best" conversation.

Re: Best Death metal band
Best Christian Death Metal band is early Mortification. "Post Momentary Affliction" CD especially.
Best secular Death Metal was DEATH. Chuck Schuldiner is very much missed. Amazing man, and amazing guitarist. R.I.P.
Chuck never made a bad CD. The CDs I always go with from him is usually either Symbolic CD or Sound of Perseverance CD. Both are amazing.
Obituary and Carcass are both very good too for secular Death Metal. Cause of Death CD from Obituary especially, and Heartwork CD from Carcass especially.

Re: Best Death metal band
I'm surprised to hear that. If you're referring to their first two demos, then I would agree that the sound was very subpar. However, Our Forgotten Destiny was done very well and had a really clear and distinct sound. But since that's the only truly great release they ever did, you could be right. However, on the strength of Our Forgotten Destiny, I would include them in the conversation.strangerhoncho wrote:Drop Dead was not that good. Cannibal corpse. Easily. Tomb of the mutilated/the bleeding are classics. Everything mortification failed to pull off unfortunately. Used to love mort, but looking back, they're nothing special. I guess for Christian metal they're good, but when your competition is bands like Crimson thorn and metanioa (smh), it's not hard to be above that. Extol is still imo hands down the best Christian heavy band. Period. Ole and Christer are brilliant.

Re: Best Death metal band
Not sure if this qualifies as 'Christian' death metal but it should be among the top 10, LOL

For pure death metal, i'm liking Deuteronomium a bunch as well as haShem. Feast Eternal is good, i've been listening to them forever it seems. Sacrificium is high quality. Surprisingly, the newest Impending Doom is very good, very technical when I had written them off as scene copycats at first. I have one Terraphopbia album and one by Pantokrater I enjoy. Others with DM in the music but probably not pure: Becoming the Archetype, Demon Hunter, KSE, The Burial, Extol, Hope for the Dying, Living Sacrifice, Morty, (yes a couple albums are pure DM) Solamors and A Hill to Die Upon. Any I forget? Oh, Your Chance to Die which has a female singer/growler.

Re: Best Death metal band
Keeping it to the Christian realm, I dig:
Bloodline Severed (if they count)
Corpse
Crimson Thorn
Ethereal Scourge
Extol
Immortal Souls
Living Sacrifice
Metanoia
Mortification
Paramaecium
Sacrificium
Sympathy
Mort's Scrolls of the Megilloth and Extol's Undeceived are my favorite death metal albums.

Re: Best Death metal band
Isn't this a question about a subjective topic? So to state that X band isn't good enough is merely your opinion. Drop Dead was better than some of the signed bands then, and even now. So i would say they absolutely deserve to be here. On this list of people sharing their personal opinions. In fact, they deserve it more so than some of the other bands mentioned here that aren't even death metal.strangerhoncho wrote:Drop Dead was not that good. Re: Best Death metal band
For pure death metal, I'd say:
Pantokrator - all 3 albums
Mortification - Scrolls
Living Sacrifice - Nonexistent
Extol - Burial & Undeceived
GROMS - Ascension
Ethereal Scourge (although more doom/death on most songs)
Solamors
And while they're not my favorites, I'd throw Monotheist and Possession out there as worthy of mention (but not mentioned yet).

I guess I'm happy to hear that Warbound may be better than Forever in Flames re: Broken Flesh. There was a lot of hype around FiF and I picked it up and found it brutal but kind of boring. So maybe I'll give them another shot.
You should, Warbound and even their Self Titled released after Forever in Flames is like night and day compared to Forever in Flames. Really good stuff I thought.
Re: Best Death metal band
I hadn't listened to Broken Flesh much if at all, but just checked out the s/t on Spotify. It's pretty good stuff. No stand-out songs really, but fast and brutal and well-played.

Crimson Thorn
Corpse
Immortal Souls
GROMS sound cool too

I can't speak for the latter but I would label Living Sacrifice's Nonexistent and Inhabit as death metal records.Pastèque wrote:@strangerhoncho: Living Sacrifice and Pantokrator aren't really Death Metal

Great list you have there!
Re: Best Death metal band
Um yeah they were on Nonexistent and Inhabit. Maybe you've only heard LS's non-death metal albums.
And so is Pantokrator. I've been listening to death metal since 1990 so I think I'm qualified to know what it is by now.

Re: Best Death metal band
My favs are:
early Mort
early Living Sacrifice
Revulsed (not christian per se, but has christian members)
Some others that may not be as well known:
Day of Atonement - Only one album titled Cremation of the Guilty. Very good death metal. (Features Lincoln Bowen and Phil Gibson, both of whom were Mortification members)
Bloodwork have released some nice material
InExordium born out of Paramaecium. Again, not christian per se, but has christian members)
Fearscape - some great progressive death/black (may not strictly fit into the death metal category, but has strong influences there of)
Scourged Flesh - Put out some very good death metal

Re: Best Death metal band
In a general order:
Extol
Blood Thirsty
Becoming the Archetype (Solamors too)
Tortured Conscience
Enshrouding (their last was more death metal than black while the first two are more black)
Bloodwork
Immortal Souls (keeps getting better IMO)
Pantokrator
Ascendant
Consuming Fire
Mortification (just the first three really)
Aceldama
Necroblation
Separatist
There are a few other bands that blur the genre line with black, doom and death metal influence:
Dalit
They Wither
Mercy
Azorrague
Not sure where to put Revulsed. I get very little from their lyrics, though I see a Christian bend in a depravity sense. I don't think in any way are they aimed that direction. Great album though.
