No. It's just a lyrical difference, that's it. You don't see satanic thrash as a sub genre do you?Black Rider wrote:I get what he's saying though. There's thrash and then there's Christian thrash, it's like a sub genre.

Tbf, Christian bands are lumped together in a scene the way that satanic/political/whatever bands aren't. Though that's why I prefer to consider it a scene, since there's really no musical differenceChristian Thrash Rules wrote:No. It's just a lyrical difference, that's it. I've seen satanic bands listed as a sub genre. I don't care either way just saying I get his point. Scene might work better.

Christian scene is totally accurate. I agree with that. I'm just trying to point out that "Christian" makes no sense as a sub genre.StevenCressler wrote:Tbf, Christian bands are lumped together in a scene the way that satanic/political/whatever bands aren't. Hey Christian Thrash Rules, back in the 90's, Venom, Celtic Frost, Possessed, Bathory and even Mercyful Fate and a few others I am missing were often reffered to as the first wave of black metal. I don't know exactly when but eventually the black metal needs to sound like Bathory, Mayhem, Darkthrone etc. etc. to be black metal school of thought came about. As you can see only one of those bands sounds like Bathory but it is easy to see what they have in common. Also Trouble were marketed as white metal at the time.Christian Thrash Rules wrote:If Christian metal is a subgenre, then that means every lyrical theme is a subgenre. Mythology, politics, satanism, occult, humanity, philosophy, it just doesn't work. Christianity is a lyrical theme, nothing to do with genres.
Even today some hold the view that Christian black metal cannot exist. It is not real black metal. I see their point. I never call it unblack but usually I would call it black metal style.
I also don't agree that every lyrical theme is as important/relevant as Christian metal or black metal and that they could form or sustain a genre.

This is a very accurate map of metal genres, and what influenced them. You'll notice the only section that focuses purely on Christian bands is Unblack Metal. Including Antestor and Horde, so specifically black metal bands with Christian lyrics. It's the only section specifically for Christian. The glam metal section has Stryper in it, but also plenty of secular bands sooooooo
